Star Duo To Battle It Out Once Again

By Jeff Collerson

Group winners Black Bear Lee and Magic Spring will reprise their thrilling May 7 duel when they clash again in Saturday night's free for all event at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The draw does little to solve the punters' conundrum as while Black Bear Lee will start favourite from his ideal box one slot, Magic Spring, who races in the centre of the track, is nicely positioned in box six.

When they last met Magic Spring led to the back straight from Black Bear Lee who surged to the lead approaching the home bend to defeat his old rival by five lengths in 29.76.

But Magic Spring's form has since improved and while he posted splits of 5.42 and 13.83 on May 7, he clocked 5.41 and 13.78 when he led throughout on May 14.

And in his all-the-way win last week Magic Spring recorded 5.38 and 13.82 with Black Bear Lee coming from an awkward box six draw and third place on  the back straight to win at his only subsequent satart.

The two greyhounds' current form sets the scenario for a mouth-watering clash on Saturday night.

Black Bear Lee's trainer Ruth Matic could land a winning double as her lightly-raced juvenile Zulu Power will be favourite to make a successful Wentworth Park debut in the 5th grade gapnsw.com.au Stakes (race nine, 520m).

Zulu Power has won two of four starts, leading throughout in a sizzling 29.81 over 520m at Nowra on April 11 and coming from behind to score there in 30.26 on Monday.

Although Zulu Power has not raced at Wentworth Park, Matic disclosed that the greyhound has trialled over the 520m course.

"She did not do anything flash, she only ran 30.50-odd, but I'm not placing any store in that time,'' Matic said.

"Zulu Power trialled after the final event on race night and had been sitting in the car all night, listening to the lure whizzing around.

"Knowing what she is like, she would have worked herself into an excitable state by the time she trialled and she will be a different, more relaxed proposition when she is kennelled away quietly on Saturday night.

"Zulu Power is a strong finisher and I was pleased with her win at Nowra on Monday because she had to really dig deep to win.''

Screen Test has not won at Wentworth Park since August but he has the draw and is in good enough form to end the drought in Saturday night's 5th grade ladbrokes.com.au Stakes (race seven, 520m)

Screen Test showed a glimpse of his best ability with a strong finishing second to Entreaty in a similar race at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

The greyhound has had a win and two placings from his past six starts but has not drawn closer to the rails than box four in his past dozen Wentworth Park outings.

"He has been coming up with bad draws over and over again at Wenty and being in box three on Saturday night is a big improvement," Steve Moran, husband to Screen Test's trainer Pauline Moran, said.

"Screen Test is going as well as he can and with a clear run we expect him to clock around 30.10 or 30.20 this week.''

Saturday night's stand-out bet should be the Charlie Lamb-trained One Hill, who has box one in the 4th grade gbota.com.au Stakes (race eight, 520m).

One Hill led throughout from box five to record his personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.72 when he won a 5th grade on May 7 but bungled the jump before a fast finishing second, fom box six, behind To A Tee at headquarters last Saturday night.

One Hill is a good railer who has won two of his five races while wearing the red rug.

Emission Control, box two, could lead One Hill around the first turn but Lamb's greyhound looks poised to get the perfect sit and should power home too strongly.
