Start Is The Key For Emission Control

By Jeff Collerson

Emission Control has won her past two starts from wide boxes but trainer Brian Barrington concedes she will need to begin quickly if she is to complete a winning hat trick at Wentworth Park tonight.

Emission Control has box seven in the 5th grade AAA Radiator Specialists Stakes (520m, race 3) and is set to start favourite after an impressive all-the-way win in 30.26 at Wentworth Park on April 30.

"She had box eight in her most recent win but she jumped smartly and cut right across the field to reach the rails," Barrington said.

"Because she began so well she was able to clear her rivals and be in front at the first turn so from box seven on Wednesday she will have to do the same thing.

"Emission Control goes very fast after about 10 metres, then continues to go quick for around 300 metres, before paddling at the end of 520 metre races."

The Neil Staines-trained Wairo Bob, box eight, appears to be Emission Control's toughest opponent.

Wairo Bob has won twice from the outside draw so is nicely positioned.

"While Wairo Bob may be my greyhound's main danger, it is encouraging to hear that Neil's dog is likely to run straight to the first turn because I don't want him chopping off my greyhound," Barrington said.

Berzerk won a fourth and fifth grade at Wentworth Park on April 23 so looks well placed in a similar event on Wednesday night.

The Jason  MACKAY-trained former Victorian, who has won 20 races, has box five in the Follow Us On Facebook Stakes (520m, race 8).

And while Berzerk has drawn awkwardly on paper, MACKAY is unconcerned about his dog emerging from the "squeeze" box.

"He looks well graded in this type of race and while it may sound silly, I think box five will suit him," MACKAY said.

"Reason for that is that Berzerk likes to run in the centre of the track so I believe he is nicely drawn."

The Peter Neilson-trained Fab Surfy looks Berzerk's danger but he will need to begin smartly from box two.

Rubelly Magic, a keen railer who has box three, has brilliant early speed and could cut Fab Surfy off at box rise.
