Fabregal Aims For Happy Angle Park Return

By Stuart Turner

Trainer Robyn Mackellar believes recent Group 2 Queensland Bogie Leigh Futurity winner Fabregal can make a winning return to Angle Park on Thursday night.

The remarkably consistent greyhound, who has scored 15 wins and seven minor placings from 22 starts so far, jumps from box eight in the Warriorslax Grade Five Stakes (race five, 515m).

This is Fabregal’s first race since her successful trip to Albion Park, which saw her claim a thrilling victory by a length from Split Image in the $47,250-to-the-winner decider on April 14.

It is also her first start from box eight since November for the daughter of Fabregas and Allinga Aye Jay but Mackellar said her greyhound can salute again.

“She doesn’t crash left as badly as she used to and I think she has the early speed to clear them,” Mackellar said.

“She’s nicely rested (from competition) but we gave her a trial at Angle Park last week and she ran well, so she’s still looking sharp.

“There’s some pretty seasoned greyhounds in this one but I’m optimistic she can win.”

Fabregal has been a terrirfic performer since debuting in October last year and has won eight of her last nine starts.

She has a best of 29.60 at Angle Park and looks the pick in this, although Rhynstone Jetta (box two) looks ideally drawn to challenge.

The Martin Doyle-trained greyhound was a devastating 29.54 winner at Angle Park last start and is also in great form, having won his last three starts in sub-30 second times at Angle PARK.

Fabregal became the first SA-based greyhound to win the Futurity, which also earned Mackellar her biggest title in the sport so far.

“From behind the boxes at Albion Park I couldn’t tell she had won,” Mackellar said. “I could hear Desley Williams (friend) screaming and that’s when I knew she’d got it.

“It was a wonderful night and one I’ll always remember.

“I think we’ve picked the right races for her and worked her through the grades, which has been important.

“We’ll keep an eye on the big races coming up and see what she can go for.”

In other Angle Park Thursday action, promising Harbormaster (box six) can make it five wins from eight starts with victory in race two (515m).

The Kirin Corby-trained newcomer has won his last two starts at Angle Park in storming fashion, including a 29.61 run two starts back.

Gun McBain (box one, race four) and Fusaichi Kahn (box eight, race seven) were both sound last winners and look the picks in their respective races.

After two unsuccessful races in WA, Real Flash (box six) can make a successful return to SA in race nine over the 515m.

The Troy Murray-trained greyhound ran 29.51 on her last start at Angle Park and has won once and placed twice in four previous starts wearing the green rug.
