Megsie Marble On A Roll For Buckley

By Stuart Turner

Megsie Marble confirmed her status as a "special" talent with her victory in the Group 3 Classicbet Nowra Summer Puppy Classic (520m) on Saturday night.

The Merv Buckley owned and trained greyhound held off a valiant challenge from Maya Herrera to win Saturday night's $25,000-to-the winner final and maintain her unbeaten record.

Jumping only fairly from box three, the red-hot $1.50 favourite produced a sizzling run of 29.55 - just 0.55 outside the track record - to triumph and secure her fourth win from four starts.

Kennel spokesman and Buckley's son Jason said the hard-fought victory had underlined Megsie Marble's status as one of NSW's hottest pups.

"She's something special," he said.

"She always looked like she had promise and she has certainly shown that. It was just a matter of whether she could do it in a field.

"I thought the main danger was Maya Herrera. She is very strong and if she hadn't had that sizzling run home then she may well have caught her.

"Megsie Marble is a pretty good greyhound and now we'll see what she's capable of."

The daughter of High Earner and Secret Marble was the strong favourite fro the final after two strong runs in the three-week series, including a 29.54 run in the heats.

Maya Herrera ($30.10) threatened to score a surprise win for local trainer Garry Edwards but Megsie Marble eventually came home by two-and-a-quarter lengths to score a first group title for Buckley.

"She keeps showing her ability," Jason Buckley said.

"You put her in a race and she will go inside or outside the other greyhounds. She doesn't have too many quirks and just seems a faultless trainer.

"She's doing everything right and is running times as well."

Martam Gold ($15.90) was third for Michael Clayton.

As well as her three triumphs in this series, Megsie Marble also has a 29.89 victory at Dapto to her name.

The win also secured a first Group title for Buckley senior, a retired former masseur based in the south-west Sydney suburb of Catherine Field.

Buckley resumed training about a decade ago after his wife Bev passed away and has enjoyed notable success recently with city class Black's A Marble, a winner of 11 of 21 starts.

"Dad's greyhounds are like his babies," Jason Buckley said. "He puts in an enormous amount of work and dedicates his whole life to his greyhounds.

"He does a good job rearing them. All his greyhounds can run good times - it's just whether of course they can make that next step.

"I'm not sure where he will take Megsie Marble next but she's one to keep an eye on."
