Weekend Binge Ready To Head South

By Jeff Collerson

Weekend Binge is set to be transferred to leading Melbourne trainer Kel Greenough after again smashing the Casino 484m record last Friday.

The Allan Lang owned and trained Weekend Binge took his record to 10 wins from 13 starts by clocking 27.14, .20sec quicker than the time standard he had posted a week earlier.

Remarkably the previous record had been set by Tweed Dancer at 27.62.

Weekend Binge is a half brother to Lang's great sprinter Paw Licking, who is now at stud.

Lang trained Paw Licking early in his career but after being sent to Greenough's Melbourne kennels he went on to earn $430,000 after winning a Group 1 and four Group 2 finals as well as establishing three track records.

"I am running out of races up here,'' Northern Rivers trainer Lang said. "Kel Greenough is in America at present but when he gets home at the weekend I'll talk to him and arrange to send Weekend Binge down to Victoria.

"I was offered $50,000 for Weekend Binge after he won his maiden race at Wauchope but I've made it clear to everyone he is not for sale at any price because I don't want to be pestered.''

The aptly-named Awesome Danny will tackle the forthcoming Cosmic Rumble Dubbo Cup following his brilliant all-the-way win at Dapto on Thursday night.

Awesome Danny covered the 520m in 29.81 and has now won six of his past 13 starts.

"I'll take him to Dubbo for next Monday's Dubbo Cup heats because I think the track will suit him," Jake White, son of trainer Wayne White, said.

"Unfortunately we won't have the chance to give him a trial there beforehand but we're hoping he can get on the bunny and feel his way around the track.

"If he qualifies for the final he will have had the benefit of a run on the track.''

The final of the Cosmic Rumble Dubbo Cup, worth $15,000 to the winner, will be run over 516m on Sunday, April 24.

Camacho, who enhanced his record to a remarkably consistent 21 wins from 44 starts with a blistering 22.38 performance over 400m at Maitland on Friday, could soon be seen back in action at Wentworth Park.

Part-owner Ray Smith said the Ron Bell-trained dog had received a setback before the Maitland race, which was his first in six weeks.

"He didn't quite bow a tendon but he had a bubble on it so had to be rested,'' Smith said.

"Camacho does not run a strong 520m at Wentworth Park but he has won three races there and he always has a chance of getting away with a big lead and pinching a race there.

"He is still only three years old so our trainer Ron Bell is trying to build Camacho's fitness back up so he is ready to tackle Wentworth Park again.''
