Bessy Boo Sets Wentworth Park Record

Wentworth Park record-breaker Bessy Boo has added another chapter to his wonderful career – and there may be a few more memorable moments to come.

The evergreen greyhound (pictured) scored his 26th win at the Glebe track on Wednesday night, surpassing the previous record of track wins and taking his prize money earnings to the verge of $300,000.

Trained by western Sydney couple Alan and Christine Proctor, Bessy Boo has been one of NSW’s most outstanding greyhounds since debuting in November 2013.

Christine Proctor said she only found moments before his latest win that her greyhound was on the verge of the landmark achievement.

“It was quite a shock,” she said. “To have a greyhound hold a record like that is fantastic.

“There’s no secret – it’s all about him. He just loves to get in the car and go to races.

“What he’s done for us is unbelievable – he’s wonderful.”

It was a fittingly trademark run by Bessy Boo, who jumped only fairly from box one but produced his familiar powerful mid-race burst to surge home by three-and-three-quarter-lengths ahead of brother and kennelmate Inner City.

The victory – achieved in a best of the night time of 29.71 – saw Bessy Boo overtake the previous record set 16 years ago by Stately Bird.

The triumph took the son of Bekim Bale and My Black Bess’s overall career record to 36 wins and 42 minor placings from 119 starts, with his prize money earnings now standing at $295,640.

His biggest victory came in the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic back in June 2014, when he scored the Proctors’ biggest title in more than four decades of training.

“We’re over the moon at this stage of our careers to have a greyhound achieving records like this,” Christine Proctor said.

“He’ll let us know when he wants to retire, but while he’s racing like this then he’ll keep going. I know the owners love seeing him race as well.

“Like all our dogs, he’ll keep getting his treats as well. He’s just such an adorable greyhound.”
