Lioness Lulu Ready to Strike Gold

By Jeff Collerson

Lioness Lulu's love affair with Wentworth Park shows no signs of abating with the Victorian stayer maintaining her unbeaten Sydney record with another rousing victory on Saturday night.

Lioness Lulu (pictured) began as if fired from a catapult for an all-the-way win in heat one of the Group 3 Wentworth Park Gold Cup, winning easily in 42.24.

Tizza Nitro, who won heat two for local trainer Rob Tyler, took 42.55 to cover the 720m.

And Lioness Lulu, who had previously won a heat and final of Wentworth Park's Group 1 Association Cup in 42.09 and 42.21, posted a mid-race split of 29.63 with 29.99 recorded in heat two.

"I believe she goes better at Wentworth Park than in Victoria is because of the noisy lure here," trainer Mark Giddings said.

"The squeaker on the lure really has her switched on and  because Wentworth Park is built up compared to most Victorian tracks, the sound is contained and easy for the dogs to hear.''

To ease the discomfort of the now regular car trips from her kennel in Toolleen, near Bendigo, Lioness Lulu is ensconced in a compression suit during the journey and "she loves it'' say her connections.

Tizza Nitro's trainer Rob Tyler was naturally pleased with his greyhound's first 720m win but concedes it will be tough to defeat Lioness Lulu in next Saturday night's final.

"My greyhound drew box three and has a nice final draw but Lioness Lulu's box eight draw looks perfect for her,'' Tyler said.

"Young Gun, who has box seven, is usually a very slow beginner and the way Lioness Lulu has jumped in her three Wenty starts, she seems drawn to get an easy run to an early lead in the final.''

Being in an early race might have been the catalyst which allowed Winsome Warrior to win in a sizzling 29.88 at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Winsome Warrior becomes anxious when kennelled for long periods of time and when he was drawn in race one on Saturday night trainer Bradley Barnes was delighted.

The dog sat in third spot at the first turn but swept around pacemakers Feel Your Halo and Dawn Mini to lead on the back straight before coming away for a six lengths win.

Winsome Warrior's run home time of 11.72 easily bettered Star Torana's 11.98 posted in Saturday night's Free For All.

Trainer George Borg conceded he was "surprised'' his consistent greyhound Gate Juan broke 30 seconds for the first time at Wentworth Park when she led throughout in a 520m fifth grade.

Gate Juan clocked 29.88 and ran home in 11.88 but while Borg said he had not expected her to go so fast.

"This is the first time she has not got touched at any stage," he said. "Previously when she has won at Wentworth Park Gate Juan has had to burrow her way to the lead but tonight's race was like a solo trial for her.''

The curiously named Jeremiah Horstig ended a run of Wentworth Park outs for Did I Entertain's trainer Robert Arnold when he led throughout at his Sydney debut on Saturday.

Jeremiah Horstig, who had won by 10 lengths at his previous start at Nowra, is a true home-grown product as he is a son of Arnold's prolific short course winning sprinter Coarse Language and was whelped by the trainer's bitch Wow Pretty Girl.

"I named this greyhound after a dear friend who lives in San Francisco,'' Arnold explained. "He is a retired airline pilot whose name is actually Jeremiah Horsting but because that was one letter above what is allowed on a greyhound's papers I had to omit the 'n' from the dog's racing name.''

Box draw for Saturday night's Wentworth Park Gold Cup is 1 Golden Gate 2 Phantom Reign 3 Tizza Nitro 4 Explosive Range 5 Nureyev 6 Sandave Sapphire 7 Young Gun 8 Lioness Lulu with the reserves Whittaker and Cristalle Coco.

See you next week!
