Nutt Hoping Jewels Can Shine

Mako, Run The Jewels and Costin, who made impressive first appearances in performance trials at Bulli and Dapto late last week, are being groomed for the next $10,000 to the winner Wentworth Park Maiden series commencing April 6.

The trio, by Barcia Bale from Glory Of Love, are being trained by Chris Nutt whose business partner Shaun Evans is preparing another promising unraced youngster, Rockstar Kaito, for the same series.

Rockstar Kaito, by Barcia Bale from Nutt's former smart bitch Parisette, won her performance trial at Dapto last Thursday in 30.27 when tackling 520m for the first time.

Rockstar Kaito's grand-dam is Paris St Germain, mother of the 2011 Australian Cup winner St Pierre along with top class sprinters Nitro Nori, Jai Alation and Slick Rick.

Mako led throughout to win his Bulli 472m trial on Friday in 26.50, holding out his strong finishing kennelmate and sister Run The Jewels to win by three-quarters of a length.

Costin, named after leading jockey Winona Costin, recorded 30.20 in finishing second to Tracey Hurst's Good Odds Bricky in her 520m performance trial at Dapto.

Nutt ranks the Barcia Bale/Glory Of Love litter as potentially the best he has bred.

"The quickest of them at breaking in stage was a dog named Wamogo, but he has had a setback so is three weeks behind his siblings in fitness and experience,'' Nutt said.

"Mako had been trialling brilliantly before his all the way Bulli performance trial win and as it was his first time going as far as 472m it wasn't surprising he got a bit tired in the straight.

"Run The Jewels especially please me by getting so close to her brother at the finish because she had been checked in the run to the first turn.

"These pups are from the second litter produced by Glory Of Love, which Shaun and I bought from her breeder Harry Markou.

"The first litter, sired by Bekim Bale, included the good stayers Starc and Love Affair, who won 15 races between them and were competitive contemporaries of the champion long distance dog Space Star.

"Glory Of Love has had a third litter, now five months old, to none other than Fernando Bale.''

Retired butcher Leighton WINTER had his most successful meeting as a trainer in More than 20 years when he landed a winning treble at Dubbo on Thursday.

WINTER, who trains a small team on 68 acres at Brocklehurst, 15km from the Dubbo track, scored over 400m with Total Revolution and Total Silence in 23.22 and 23.28 respectively and over 318m with Total Backflipin 18.33.

"A couple of decades back I took five greyhounds to Dubbo and wound up with four wins and a second but last Thursday's was my most successful meeting since then,'' WINTER said.

Leighton WINTER was the owner of former champion stayer Total Denial, who, when trained by Pauline Moran at Londonderry, won 22 of 41 races including the Group 1 Albion Park Gold Cup after breaking the Wentworth Park 720m record in March 2002.

As a trainer WINTER has had most success with Total Sensation, who won nine of 41 starts, including three races in a row at Wentworth Park in May, 2012.

"Unfortunately Total Sensation never came in season, so I was never able to get any pups from her,'' WINTER said.

Fancy More is unlikely to tackle the heats of the Group 2 PPK Limited Maitland Gold Cup on March 31 despite recording a near record 22.12 in his first up win over 400m there last Thursday.

Fancy More, owned and trained at Lidsdale by Paul Steedman, makes his next appearance over 400m on Wednesday in the Goulburn To Richmond Final at the Londonderry course.
The greyhound had clocked slick times of 19.52 over 350m at Goulburn and 22.29 at Bulli before Thursday's Maitland win.

"The Maitland Cup is tempting but Fancy More is only young and I'm reluctant to throw him to the wolves by pitting him again far More experienced group race speedsters,'' Steedman said."At this stage I prefer to nurse him along and take him through his grades.''

Steedman, who has been involved in greyhound racing since 1978, bought Fancy More as a three month old puppy for only $1000, buying the youngster from his breeder Peter Stanford.
