GRNSW reminds all owners and trainers that it has reduced the fee to enter their greyhounds into the GRNSW Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) program from $100 to $50.
The decision to reduce the fee is designed to make the GAP program more affordable for industry participants and to increase the number of greyhounds that enter the program.
The $50 entry fee will only be payable once a greyhound is accepted into the GAP program following a behavioural assessment.
The change to entry fee will complement GAP’s new intake model that has now been in operation for six months and has seen a drastic reduction in waiting times for greyhounds to be entered into the program.
Under the new model, the greyhound is presented to a GAP staff member at a scheduled pre-assessment session at Newcastle, Richmond or Dapto. After a behavioural assessment, if the greyhound is found to be suitable as a pet, it will enter the program and be taken into GAP’s kennels on that same day.
If the greyhound is not successful, GAP staff provide immediate feedback to the owner or trainer on remediation works that can be undertaken to potentially increase the greyhound’s chances for its next re-assessment should the participant wish to re-present the greyhound once it is more suitable.
All greyhounds must still present at the pre-assessment sessions with the appropriate paperwork as well as their race papers/card, C5 vaccination certificate (to have been administered at least 10 days prior) and muzzle in order to be pre-assessed on the day. Further, the entry fee of $50 will only be payable if the greyhound is successful and accepted into the program on the day of the pre-assessment.
GRNSW anticipates that this cost reduction for owners and trainers, combined with the new intake model, will make re-homing an easier task for owners and therefore lead to more entries into the program.
This will support the expansion of the program via increased resources, improved infrastructure and greater marketing of the breed, all of which will drive a greater number of greyhounds being re-homed.
