Benteke Looking To Score A Win In Magic Maiden

By Jeff Collerson

Some of the country's best young greyhounds will contest Wednesday's Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden (520m) heats at Wentworth Park.

Ten heats of the $25,000-to-the-winner series take place, with some excellent action in store.

Among the ones to watch is promising Benteke">Benteke, who has drawn box four in the fourth heat.

Benteke - named after the Liverpool FC and Belgian striker - began only fairly from box three but was soon in front when he won a Wentworth Park performance trial by seven-and-a-half lengths in a blistering 29.82 on February 27.

He has since trialled brilliantly at Dapto and trainer Ruth King said her greyhound was looking good.

"I put him over 520m at Dapto last Friday and he got under the 29.60 mark,'' trainer Ruth King said. "Benteke does every thing right and is usually a reliable beginner.

"Box four in itself is not too bad because he is not a tight railer, he likes to run a couple of dogs off the fence.

"Of course it all depends on what the greyhounds drawn around him do at the start, I just hope he doesn't find trouble through no fault of his own.''

Most interesting clash of Wednesday's meeting, which features 10 heats of the $25,000 to the final winner maiden event, comes in heat three.

The DEAN Swain-trained Hernando Kahn will be favourite after drawing perfectly in box one but he won't have an easy task with the promising JusTifia">Tifia">Tifia">JusTifia">Tifia, trained by CHRIS O'Brien, in box seven.

O'Brien won the 2012 Magic Maiden final in race record time with Tifia, the dam of Tifia">JusTifia.

"Tifia">JusTifia has box seven and I am not sure whether she is well drawn or not because she does not have field experience,'' O'Brien said. "I expect her to run in a straight line from the boxes to the first turn.

"I trialled her at Wentworth Park last Tuesday night and she clocked 30.40 which was satisfactory because I don't believe the track was fast.''

Hernando Kahn is more experienced, having raced twice in the Graham Gibbons Memorial Maiden series at Bulli and finishing second to Tullabung Rock in the February 19 final.

Swain is jubilant to have his 34kg greyhound in box one.

"For such a big dog Hernando Kahn is a smart beginner and very good railer,'' Swain said. "He will push up along the inside fence going to the first turn.

"Hernando Kahn has had two trials at Wentworth Park and I expect him clock 30.20 on Wednesday night.''

Tifia">JusTifia's litter brother and kennelmate Bulkender">Bulkender makes his Wentworth Park debut in heat seven and CHRIS O'Brien revealed this dog also trialled 30.40 at Wentworth Park last Tuesday night.

"Bulkender finished fifth to Tullabung Rock in heat of the Graham Gibbons Memorial at Bulli but even though he is a big dog he is better suited to a two turn course like Wentworth Park than on a track like Bulli,'' O'Brien said.

Bulkender defeated Tifia">JusTifia in a smart 30.07 performance trial at Dapto on January 28 but has drawn awkwardly in box four on Wednesday.

Dubbo trainer Charmaine Roberts will rug up seven female siblings in the Magic Maiden heats, and all have had Wentworth Park trial experience.

"They did not trial as fast as I had hoped they would but they have ability and are improvers,'' Roberts said.

"The best of them is probably Milly Keeping, but she has drawn the wrong side of the track in box eight in heat five.''

Another interesting duel looms in heat one where the Kayla-Jane COLEMAN-trained Frontal Lobe (box two) takes on Johnny Antonelli's Joyanna">Joyanna, box seven.

The draw favours Frontal Lobe, a litter sister to COLEMAN's outstanding duo Where Art Thou and Cardiology.

Frontal Lobe had box three when she came from behind to win a Wentworth Park performance trial in 30.20 last Thursday night while Joyanna took 30.38 to win his trial on the same night.

Joyanna would have gone quicker had he not been hampered from box five while crossing to the rails at the first turn but his wide draw is against him again.

Semi-finals of the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden take place on Saturday, April 19, with the final a week later.
