Newcomer Looks The Real Deal

By Jeff Collerson

One Real Deal shocked even his owner-trainer Fay Trowbridge with his whirlwind 400m performance trial at Maitland on Thursday.

"He is only 17 months and two weeks old and in an earlier look at Maitland trial all he clocked was 22.98,'' Trowbridge said of her unraced, home-bred youngster, who made his first public appearance in the performance trial.

One Real Deal is by Cosmic Rumble from Hail Queenie, a handy race bitch who has been a phenomenal producer for Trowbridge and her husband Noel.

Hail Queenie won eight races and was placed twice over 520m at Wentworth Park, but was a slick front runner who once got within .04 of the 400m record at The Gardens.

Her first litter, sired by Lochinvar Marlow, include Black Driftwood, a finalist in this week's Richmond Derby, Gauge This, a Wentworth Park winner, Hail Storming, who has won 18 of 32 races, and Gracas King, who won 12 of 17 starts.

"Fay trained Gracas King early in his career then we sent him to Jason Thompson in Victoria and he won a string of races for him, with some of the dog's sectional times equivalent to those of Fernando Bale,'' Noel Trowbridge said.

"One Real Deal broke in well and was 36.5kg when we put him into training but has now trimmed down to 34.4kg which will be close to his racing weight.

"We will have to look for a maiden race with good prize money on offer as One Real Deal won't be ready for the group 3 Wentworth Park Magic Maiden heats on March 9.''

The Trowbridges can look forward to plenty of excitement over the next couple of years as Hail Queenie's third litter, sired by El Grand Senor, are nine months of age.

When Le Sands broke the 297m track record winning last Thursday night's Dapto Puppy Auction Classic he completed a unique treble for brood bitches Magic Capers and Dusty Retreat, who are litter sisters.

Le Sands, owned by Diane Stollery and trained by Andy Lord, is a son of Dusty Retreat while the two previous Dapto Puppy Classic winners were whelped by that bitch's sibling Magic Capers.

France Soir, who won the 520m Puppy Classic final on December 3 in a flying 29.57sec, is a November, 2013 son of Magic Capers.

And Magic Capers had produced the previous Dapto Puppy Classic winner when Sokyo, sired in July 2012 by High Earner, took out the February, 2015 final over 297m.

Breeder Diane Stollery, daughter-in-law of former leviathan bookmaker John Stollery and daughter of Golden Easter Egg winning trainer Max Burdekin, bought back Le Sands, France Soir and Sokyo at the Dapto puppy sales.

"But I sold Magic Capers' best offspring, Magic Earner, along with Pierino, who won the 2013 Tweed Heads Galaxy for Glenda Dart,'' Stollery said.

"Pierino was from Magic Capers' first litter, by Where's Pedro, while Magic Earner, who has won 17 races and $85,000 prizemoney, is by High Earner so is a litter sister to Sokyo.''

Fratelli Fresh, another member of the High Earner-Magic Capers litter, won 16 of 37 races for Victorian trainer Dustin Drew and has been retired and recently whelped a litter of pups.

How about this for a "match'' made in heaven?

Queen Esther, who won 25 of 106 starts and earned $127,305 in stakes for owner-trainer Noelene Holloway, has become a mother.

And the father of Queen Esther's big litter of 12 is none other than the mighty Dyna Double One.

Dyna Double One took his earnings to $910,316 when he won his heat of the Australian Cup last Saturday night at The Meadows, taking this multi track record breaker's tally to 30 wins from 53 starts.

Benteke zoomed to favouritism for the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden series with a sensational 29.82 performance trial win at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The Ruth King-trained juvenile, who is just 19 months old, took the lead approaching the first turn to win a four dog trial by more than seven lengths.

His time for the 520m was a remarkable .09sec faster than the figures posted by She Oaks in her best of the night win during Saturday's race meeting.

Benteke came to Wentworth Park with a big reputation after winning a 400m Bulli performance trial in January 20 in a blistering 22.35 and showed on Saturday he was even better suited by the additional 120m of Saturday's hitout.

Heats of the Magic Maiden will be held at Wentworth Park on Wednesday, March 9.
