Davey Goes For Eight In A Row

By Stuart Turner

Davey, who has dominated the rural racing scene in recent months with seven wins in a row, will make his Wentworth Park debut this evening in 5th Grade Ladbrokes GEE Mar 9-26 Stakes (520m, race eight).

The son of Fabregas and Macey jumps from box six in tonight’s race in what will be his first start for new trainer Michael Hodges.

Davey has been in super form for the past six months, winning consecutive races at Coonamble and Dubbo for previous trainer Rhonda Millsteed.

Following Davey’s latest win, an impressive 30.07 victory over the 516m at Dubbo, Millsteed, who also owns Davey, decided to send the greyhound to Hodges kennels in South Penrith.

While tonight’s assignment at Wentworth Park will undoubtedly be the toughest challenge of Davey’s career to date, Hodges is confident he is up to the challenge.

“I think he will run well,” Hodges said.

“He’s had a couple of trials at Wentworth Park recently which were okay. His times weren’t electric but, having said that, when he was there last Tuesday  no other greyhound was going hugely fast either.

“His run home times have been strong in his trials which is encouraging. He’s also had a couple of runs up the straight with me as well and is looking good.”

Davey’s closest challenger is likely to be Equal Ben (box eight), who is another handy NSW country track performer that finished third on his Wentworth Park debut last week.

“There doesn’t look too much early pace around Davey, which should help him,” Hodges said.

“I also don’t think the 520 metres will be a problem for him. He needs a bit of luck but if he can begin cleanly and get around the first turn then he’ll go okay.”

In other Wentworth Park Wednesday action, Twist Me Over (box two) looks a good chance to continue her impressive comeback in the Ladbrokes Bet Better Stakes (520m, race two).

The Garry Edwards-trained greyhound finished fourth over the 365m at Nowra on February 8 after almost seven months out before winning at the South Coast track over the 520m on February 15.

She has won three of her seven previous visits to Wentworth Park and will relish an inside draw.

To A Tee can also underline his impressive return to racing with victory in the Paint The Town Red Stakes (520m, race seven).

The son of Fabregas and Melkate won at Gosford on February 9 following a five month spell before a sound placing at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Madam Anne (box three) finished second on her last visit to Wentworth Park on February 17 and can go one better in the Gala Dinner Mar26 Tix $110Pp Stakes (race nine, 520m).

Syd Swain’s greyhound has built a decent record of three wins and two minor placings in eight starts so far and with this favourable draw can lead them home.

Syd’s son DEAN should also be celebrating with his greyhound Emmet Kahn looking the night’s best bet in race one.

Emmet Kahn finished fourth at Wentworth Park last week from box eight but has plenty of ability and should do better from box one in this race.
