Success Just The Tonic For McGlinn

By Jeff Collerson

Jimmy McGlinn has had serious health problems in recent years but since the emergence of his exciting prospects Mister Cowora and Bob's Uncle he says he has "never felt better.''

Mister Cowora is unbeaten in three races over 515m at Gosford, where he has broken the 30 barrier on each occasion, while Bob's Uncle made a sensational debut over 400m at Maitland last Thursday, winning in 22.28.

McGlinn, who is now 84, said their success was proving the best tonic for his health woes.

"Winning races is the best medicine in the world and you don't need to go to a doctor and get a prescription for it," he said.

"Bob's Uncle is already two years old but after breaking in extra well he was injured and needed to run in the paddock to recover fully and get ready to race.

"He is a lazy dog who won't work on his own but by driving a car alongside him I got him to take off and that got him fit.

"Just before he started racing he broke Chevy Prince's Keinbah trial track record by a tenth of a second and that is a good indication because the course is virtually identical to Appin straight track.

"Because I have had a long association with Balmain rugby league, and formerly trained greyhounds for their legendary full back and goal kicking champion Keith Barnes, I decided to name a dog after that club's flying winger Larry Corowa, who scored 64 tries for the Tigers. Unfortunately I spelled the name incorrectly but when Keith Barnes pointed that out to me I decided to leave it unchanged.

"The dog's kennelname is Larry and I told Keith that at least if the dog turns out no good it won't be an embarrassment to the former test winger.

"I was given Mister Cowora for free by his breeder Bob McColm.

"I used to give Bob a hand when he was training his top class sprinter Mr Clydesdale so he presented me with Mister Cowora as a way of thanking me.

"At three months of age Mister Cowora wasn't a weed but he was the smallest in the litter when I chose him - but I liked the look of him. He had the appearance of a real race dog and reminded me a lot of the great Brett Lee.''

TAP Out Rooster landed his third successive win when he took out Friday night's Goulburn To Bulli final and will now lineup again at Bulli in this Friday's Riverina Cup.

The Shane Pulbrook-trained greyhound won his Riverina Cup heat at Temora despite never having previously seen the track and missing the start by four lengths.

"Tap Out Rooster is back to the form he showed me when he trialled 29.90sec at Wentworth Park a while back,'' Pulbrook said.

"After that quick trial I acquired a bad batch of meat which caused my entire kennel to lose form but all my greyhounds are fine now.

"Tap Out Rooster has loads of ability but is inexperienced which is why I have been taking him around to different tracks like Goulburn, Temora and Bulli.

"Tap Out Rooster is eligible for the group three New Sensation heats at Wentworth Park on March 16 so that series is his long term goal.''

Another greyhound being aimed at the 520m New Sensation, one of the sidelight races to the Golden Easter Egg, is the Justin King-trained One Mug Left.

Owned by Peter Croghan, a prominent harness racing identity, One Mug Left staged an outstanding last-to-first performance to win at Dapto on Thursday night.

"Even though he bombed the start One Mug Left showed terrific turn of foot to lead at the first turn and covered the Dapto 520m in a smart 29.98,'' King said.

"This dog just continues to improve because when he had his first look at Dapto he took a slow 30.60sec to get around.

"Peter Croghan was one of three owners of Three Mugs In, who won at Wentworth Park for me in late 2014.

"But he is the sole owner of this greyhound, who is much quicker, and that's how the dog got his name.''

SOON after Ritza Lenny posted the fastest time of the Group 2 Ladbrokes Cyril Rowe Gold Cup heats at Bulli on Friday night his unraced litter brother Lowanna's Son won a 400m performance trial there in a blistering 22.38.

Trainer Sharron Webster plans to give Lowanna's Son a box to box trial at WP tomorrow (Tuesday) night before nominating him for a performance trial at Wenty.

"His mission is the Group 2 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden at Wentworth Park, which gets under way next month,'' Webster said.

"Lowanna's Son's litter sister Lagoon Jazzy is just as quick as her brother and she will make her first public appearance in a performance trial at Bulli next Friday.''
