Heaps Of Ability One To Watch At Mandurah

By Stuart Turner

Podium king Heaps Of Ability aims to continue his remarkably consistent record at Saturday’s Mandurah meeting.

Heaps Of Ability, who jumps from box one in the Elders Insurance Call Justin Stakes Free For All (647m, race eight), has placed or won in each of his last 24 starts stretching back to July last year.

This is his first start at Mandurah since mid-2015, with his run of notable form achieved exclusively over different distances at Northam.

He faces a tough field in this race including fellow former Victorian Blinker’s On (box three) but trainer Joe Dailly believes his greyhound should be among the leading contenders again.

“It’s amazing what he has done,” Dailly said. “He’s just an ultra-consistent greyhound who does what he needs to do.

“I’m not sure what the record is for placings but he’s certainly doing well.

“Box one isn’t ideal – I’d rather he was out wide as he likes to know where the others are – but having said that he could ping the lids and be out in front.

Heaps Of Ability has won four of his nine starts from box one and has placed on one of his two previous starts at Mandurah over this distance.

The Enzo Crudeli-trained Blinker’s On finished third last week on his first start for almost two months and looks tough to stop.

Formerly in the gun Brooke Ennis kennel, he has been a regular winner since transferring to WA last year but has only won once in eight starts wearing the white rug.

“One thing against Heaps Of Ability is this may be a bit short for him,” Dailly said. “He needs time to settle and get into the race.

“Having said that, he has an enormous motor and I know he will just sit behind them.

“There’s nothing in this race he cannot beat.”

In other Mandurah Saturday fields and form, Kruggerand looks the night’s best bet in race five (490m).

The latest star from the gun Paul Stuart kennel, Kruggerrand (box three) has won eight of his 11 starts so far and was a terrific 27.26 winner at Mandurah on his last start.

Mulwee Grand and Belfast Tommy both look ideally drawn in box one to score victories in races three and 13 respectively.

The Christine Robartson-trained Mulwee Grand has been racing solidly in recent weeks and will likely capitalize on the prized inside draw.

Belfast Tommy’s improvement since transferring from Victoria in mid-2015 was confirmed with a terrific 22.79 win from box eight at Mandurah last week.

He has placed three times wearing the red rug and looks the best on current form.

Cobra Clutch (box four) was a smart 27.60 winner last week and looks the clear top pick in race 11.
