Holloway Lands 'Magic' Derby

By Jeff Collerson

Central Coast trainer Noelene Holloway experienced her biggest thrill in greyhound racing when her tenacious sprinter Magic Spring took out the Group 1 National Derby at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Magic Spring led throughout in the National Derby, winning by nearly five lengths in relatively quick time of 29.96 on a wet track.

Speaking after the race, Holloway was full of praise for her greyhound.

"Mike (Magic Spring) is so consistent, he runs nearly the same race every time I put him around," Holloway said.

"And thankfully he is an extremely sound dog, he pulled up superbly after the Derby.

"I will now take him to Bulli for the heats of the Group 2 Ladbrokes Cyril Rowe Gold Cup at Bulli on February 12.

"Magic Spring has not raced at Bulli but I have plenty of time to take him down there for a trial on the track.

"I expect Bulli to suit him because it is a similar type of track to Maitland where Magic Spring broke the track record."

In a huge night for NSW-trained greyhounds, Nangar Flame, trained by Dennis Barnes in the NSW Central-West, finished second, just in front of Victoria's Diego Bale who was a head away in third.

Magic Spring has now had 33 starts for 14 wins and nine minor placings.
