Keune Aiming To Rule Devonport Cup

By Stuart Turner

Champion Tasmanian trainer Ted Medhurst rates Keune as the best of his three chances in Tuesday afternoon’s Group 3 Dowling McCarthy Hankook Tyres Devonport Cup (452m).

Keune ($1.70F with Sportsbet) lines-up in box two in the Devonport Cup where she will go head-to-head against kennelmates Lorus Time (box four) and Prescribe (box six).

Medhurst's greyhound was an impressive 25.10 winner in last week’s heats taking her career record to 15 wins and three minor placings from 24 starts.

She has won both of her previous starts from box two and having shaken off recent injury problems looks the standout in the final.

“We’re delighted with how she’s gone for us,” Medhurst said.

“I took her to Sandown Park for the Laurels last month and unfortunately she pulled up with an injury, but she’s regrouped well and looks good for this.

Breaker’s Tip in box one is a strong greyhound. He uses a bit of the track, so I want her to sit behind him and then make her move.

“If she can jump in front or get to the fence then she’s the one to beat.”

Medhust is not as confident about the chances of Prescribe in the cup, due to the unfavourable draw in box six. Prescribe won his heat of the cup in 25.29.

“I think the box draw has put him out of contention, but having said I know he’ll give everything he’s got,” Medhurst said.

“I think his time last week was a bit misleading as the track was probably still a bit wet from being watered.”

Medhurst believes Breaker’s Tip and Droopy’s Dasher are the main threats to Keune.

Breaker’s Tip, who has box one in the Devonport Cup, returned to form with a strong 25.47 win in a tough heat last week and with six victories from nine starts wearing the red rug, he looks ideally drawn to challenge.

Promising newcomer Droopy’s Dasher (box eight) looks another big threat, although he has  yet to start from the wide draw in eight starts so far.

“I think the strongest chances are in boxes one, two and eight, but it’s a super race with some high-quality greyhounds,” Medhurst said.

“Breaker’s Tip is a super greyhound and I’d say it’s possibly his race to lose, especially if he jumps cleanly.”

The Devonport Cup will jump at 2.44pm (ADST) and is part of a 10-race card at the Tasmanian track on Tuesday.
