Stars Go Head-To-Head In Birthday Cup

By thedogs.com.au

Some of Western Australia's best sprinters will go head-to-head in a brilliant edition of the Group 3 Mandurah Mail Birthday Cup (405m) at the Perth track tonight.

Headlining the field is fastest qualifier Westeros, who will jump from box three a week after taking out his heat in a very slick 22.53.

That win was Westeros' fastest time over the 405m at Mandurah from 28 starts and was 0.11 quicker than the second fastest qualifier Burundi

Based on that performance in his heat, the Jamie Marsh-trained greyhound looks like the one to beat in tonight's feature and he should also be well suited to the draw with most of his 14 career wins coming from  inside boxes.

Westeros will need to be at his best though as he is up against some top line sprinters, including the Paul Stuart-trained duo Astrophysic and Winsome Mission.

Astrophysic scored his fifth straight win in his heat last week and has the ideal draw of box one for tonight's assignment.

The 53-race veteran has led all the way in his recent victories and with the inside draw could register another feature race win.

While Astrophysic is likely to be among the early leaders, his kennelmate Winsome Mission will be doing his best work late.

Winsome Mission came from midfield in his heat last week to win in 22.67. While that win was highly impressive he will need plenty of luck in tonight's cup after drawing box five.

While Stuart has a strong hand in the cup, the same can be said for Nambeelup trainer Chris Halse who has Burundi and Emily's Sweet, who jump from box seven and eight respectively.

Burundi bounced back to form in last week's heats, scoring his first win in eight starts, but may struggle from the draw given he has only had the one win from 12 starts wearing the black rug.

The Mandurah Mail Birthday Cup is race 6 on the card tonight and jumps at 8.37pm (11.37pm AEDST).
