Hot Spur Looking Strong For Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Asa Flying Spur chased home the flying Magic Spring at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night so should relish a drop in class in tonight's ladbrokes.com.au Stakes at headquarters.

Asa Flying Spur is beautifully drawn in box three as Ace I Am (box two) is a slow beginner, while Pierro Kade in box four moves to the middle of the track.

It is hard to see Asa Flying Spur being beaten for the crucial early lead as the Anthony Azzopardi-trained two-year-old has had 11 starts at Wentworth Park for three wins, a second and three thirds.

When he led throughout at Wentworth Park on December 19 Asa Flying Spur posted a slick second split of 13.94 and a repeat of those figures should see him lead and win on Wednesday.

Trainer Peter Schofield describes Merlin's Rocket simply as "a nice little honest dog'' and reckons box one gives him a good chance of breaking through for his first Wentworth Park win on Wednesday night.

Merlin's Rocket will carry the red rug in heat two of the Ladbrokes Bet Better Sprint where he looks poised to get the run of the race.

Merlin's Rocket has been placed in three of eight Wentworth Park outings but produced the best metropolitan run of his career last Saturday night when he was a fast finishing second, beaten less than a length, from box eight.

"He is no world beater but he was turned sideways early in Saturday's race and I thought he was unlucky not to have won,'' Schofield said.

"Merlin's Rocket gets his chance now that he has finally drawn box one and I think from there he is capable of clocking 30.18 or 30.20 at Wenty.''

Cobber">Cobber In Motion returns to 520m racing in heat five of the Ladbrokes Bet Better Sprint after an unsuccessful foray into middle distance racing.

"I don't think he is going to get a strong 600m or 618m so I am switching him back to sprinting,'' trainer Nathan Goodwin said.

"Since he raced over 600m last Friday I have kept Cobber In Motion very fresh, hoping he will make full use of box one on Wednesday.

"All he has had is a couple of swims in the pool I have on my property and that should suit him.''

Cobber In Motion is the quickest Wentworth Park 520m greyhound in Wednesday's race, having clocked a nippy 30.05 winning a fifth grade on December 5.

That night Cobber In Motion ran down Black's A Marble and Steel Rose, who have each since proved the value of that form.

Steel Rose has since won at Wentworth Park while Black's A Marble has scored two wins at the track, the latest on Saturday night when he gave Magic Spring a start and a beating.

One Hill">Hill, sidelined for three months recently with a broken toe, is back at Wentworth Park for Wednesday night's third heat of the Ladbrokes Bet Better Sprint.

One Hill indicated he was close to top form with a fast finishing second behind Wentworth Park top grader Funky Punk over 515m at Gosford on January 1.

"He will need luck from box five but he is going as well as he was before he broke his toe,'' trainer Charlie Lamb said of One Hill's chances.

One Hill has not won at Wentworth Park but has been runner-up in three of his five appearances where he has recorded a personal best time of 30.01.

That was from box five on September 16, making One Hill easily the best performed greyhound in Wednesday's fifth grade race.
