Bessy Boo Scores Another Win At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson

Bessy Boo lifted his earnings to more than $270,000 after scoring the most surprising of his Wentworth Park wins on Saturday night.

His best of the meeting figures of 29.73 or his near record run home time of 11.62 were not what startled racegoers, it was that Bessy Boo (pictured), usually among the last to leave the boxes, jumped in front and led all the way.

Even trainer Christine Proctor was gob-smacked.

"There's no way I expected him to lead at the first turn," she said after the race.

"I always close my eyes in the early stages because I worry about him getting checked but I had a peek at the middle and back of the field and couldn't see him.

"I was wondering where he was and next second I saw his blue rug in front, I couldn't believe it."

Bessy Boo will now target Saturday night's heats of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder at Wentworth Park, as will up-and-coming sprinter Pedro Cerrano.

Pedro Cerrano followed a near record 29.40 win at Dapto on Christmas Eve with an all-the-way win in a tidy 30.01 in a fifth grade on Saturday night.

"Tonight's run will improve him because he had a hard race at Dapto so I went easy on him in the lead-up to this race," Pedro Cerrano's trainer John Little said.

"He only had a short slip so he should be a better dog next week. Pedro Cerrano is eligible for the National Derby heats on January 23 but I think he deserves a chance against all-comers in the Paws Of Thunder before tackling that series."

Black's A Marble, meanwhile, is likely to bypass the Paws Of Thunder and be saved for the age restricted National Derby despite running down prolific Wentworth Park winner Magic Spring in Saturday night's strong 520m fourth grade.

"Black's A Marble is racing with a lot of confidence and at this stage I intend to avoid taking on top graders from NSW and Victoria in the Paws Of Thunder and saving him for the Derby, where he will be up against greyhounds his own age," trainer Merv Buckley said on Saturday night.

"You can't go in them all so I prefer to hand-pick my dogs' races."

Porrentruy turns four in March but the former Victorian, a recent addition to trainer Gary Adams' Riverstone kennels, could have earned a start in Saturday night's Summer Plate heats by posting a sizzling 42.06 at his Wentworth Park debut on Saturday night.

Porrentruy, formerly in the kennels of Robbie Britton, Victoria's master trainer of stayers, led throughout to win by nine lengths.

Handler Luke Adams, the trainer's son, said: "Robbie Britton had a big opinion of Porrentruy but the dog has had a stopper bone problem and is getting along in age.

"So Robbie recommended to the greyhound's Adelaide-based owners that he might have a better future in Sydney.

"We gave him a couple of looks at Wentworth Park before tonight and he railed well but he is the type of dog which wants to get wide if he is crowded early."

There was no chance of crowding on Saturday night with Porrentruy jumping in front from box one and setting up a clear early lead.

See you next week!
