One El Of A Battle In Store

Wednesday night's final Wentworth Park meeting of the year looks a cracker with Ritza Lenny and El Magnifico, two of the hottest young prospects in years, clashing in the $10,000-to-the-winner gapnsw.com.au Maiden Final (race five, 520m).

The Mark Gatt-trained Ritza Lenny, who set the time standard in last week's heats with a blistering 29.82 performance, has drawn ideally in box one.

El Magnifico, who, like Ritza Lenny, was making his debut in his heat, recorded a fast 30.06 but would have broken the 30-second barrier comfortably if he had not have been galloped on from behind when leading at the first turn.

El Magnifico has box six in the final and trainer Julie Fletcher admits the draw has made her greyhound's task very hard.

"He will need to come out under the lids," she said. "Almirola and Aqua Cheetah, who started fastest in their heats, have drawn either side of El Magnifico in five and seven."

Daniel Gatt, brother of trainer Mark, said Ritza Lenny was in good shape for the decider.

"He has sometimes had minor injury problems after his trials but he pulled up 100 per cent after his win in the heats," Gatt said. "He has never looked better.

"He has good early speed but does not always jumps as quickly as he did in his heat, so box one is a bonus."

Beetown Tommy was a distant fifth in his Wentworth Park debut last Wednesday but Troy Vella expects the greyhound to go better from box eight in the Ladbrokes GEE March 9-26 Stakes (race nine, 520m).

"He is still learning but looks suited to box eight," Vella said.

"When he raced from box one last week, he did not jump as he usually does. The dog in box two cut him off immediately and then he wanted to go off at the first turn.

"He had not raced over the 520 metres before last week but he performed satisfactorily in his performance trial over 515 metres at Gosford and before last week I had given him a couple of post-to-post hitouts at Wentworth Park."

Vella is a highly capable hobby trainer who prepared the 2013 Group 1 Vic Peters winner Belfast Johnny.

Anita May was unsuccessful on her only previous Wentworth Park start but Barry West, whose wife Maureen trains the smart bush sprinter, said punters should discard that run when assessing form for Wednesday's Gosford to Wenty Final (race six, 520m).

"She was injured last time out at Wenty and was off the scene for six weeks, but she's come back better than ever," he said. "She has box seven in this race and Maureen and I prefer to see her drawn out wide."

Anita May won her heat at Gosford in 30.48  and, while Prince Zesta went faster, the Wests' greyhound has abundant early speed and with a clean start should lead throughout.

Cabello Mucho was never out of trouble when seventh from box five in Steel Rose's WP Fifth Grade on Saturday night but should atone in Wednesday's easier Ladbrokes Paws Heats Jan 9 Stakes (race seven, 520m).

He moves into box one and trainer Christine Proctor said the greyhound is "desperate" for the rails draw.
