Chevy Prince Reigns Again

By Jeff Collerson

Chevy Prince, bought for $70,000 by the Australian Bloodstock group but subsequently sold, produced a career-best performance at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The highly promising greyhound led all the way to win in a blistering 29.80 and underline his soaring potential.

Last September Chevy Prince was purchased by Keinbah trainer Robert Howard on behalf of his wife Natina and this was his fifth win in seven appearances for his new connections.

Despite a reputation as a risky beginner and wide runner, Chevy Prince jumped on terms with short course speedster Spiders Brother and and held his opponent out in the run to the first turn.

Chevy Prince then drew away to win by eight lengths, in a  time .14 faster than his previous Wentworth Park effort.

"I was hoping Chevy Prince would trial Spiders Brother to the first turn, but when he was able to lead at that point it was  a huge bonus," Robert Howard said.

"Chevy Prince has a lot more 'toe' than people realise - it's just usually that he is not a fast beginner.

"I'll now take him to Maitland on Thursday and then head to Bulli with him."

Skate Thin Ice showed the benefit of a return to her home kennels at Londonderry when she ran down Magic Spring in Saturday night's Free-For-All, clocking 29.91.

She had finished third and sixth in two Melbourne races since chasing home France Soir in the Dapto Puppy Auction Classic on December 3.

"She was miserable in Melbourne," trainer Luke Azzopardi said. "She seemed really unhappy from home and didn't settle into her new surroundings.

"Once she got home she was back to her old self and worked really well on my track last Wednesday morning."

Azzopardi said he is now considering entering Skate Thin Ice for the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder heats at Wentworth Park on January 9.

Queensland owner-breeder Glenn Dearlove picked the right night to watch his greyhound Steel Rose in action for the first time in NSW.

She led throughout to land her first Wentworth Park win,  jumping in front from box six to triumph in 30.07.

"I had not seen her race since I sent her down to Mark Gatt (to train), but my family were down in Sydney over Christmas so we came to see her in action," Dearlove said. "The timing was perfect."

See you next week!
