Chica Destacada Ready For Retirement

By Stuart Turner

Chica Destacada has likely run her last race, with the 2014 NSW Greyhound of the Year winner due to head to the breeding barn.

Little Chica’ (pictured) has been one of NSW’s standout greyhounds for the last two years, with her fine record including two Group titles and a second placing in the Melbourne Cup

Probably best known for her electric starts and super record from her ‘lucky’ six box, Chica Destacada has been a regular winner since debuting at Richmond in October 2013.

She shot to prominence by claiming the NSW Sprint Champiopnship  with a terrific victory over a hot field containing the likes of Tommy Brislane and Silent Effective.

She then scored a first Group 1 crown in more than 40 years of training for her trainer, western Sydney-based Doreen Drynan, with her brilliant victory in the National Sprint Championship in August last year.

She overcame a strong field featuring the likes of Bessy Boo, Star Recall and Flash Reality to claim victory at WA's Cannington track.

Three months later she produced another great run to finish second Dyna Villa in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup – a race also featuring the likes of multiple Group winners Keybow, Luca Neveelk and Awesome Project.

She later took out the Group 3 John Stollery Memorial Christmas Gift at Wentworth Park in a field also including the likes of fellow NSW stars Zipping Willow and Rue De Kahn.

Chica Destacada’s final victory came with a 29.88 victory at Wentworth Park on October 31 – her 17th triumph at the Sydney track.

In all she finished with 24 triumphs and 14 minor placings from 71 starts.

Another greyhound who definitely will not race again is 2015 Group 1 National Derby runner-up Bad Boy Sniper.

The Jason Magri-trained greyhound, who ran a devastating 29.43 at Wentworth Park in January and won more than $70,000 prizemoney, has been retired due to a recurring injury.

He finished second behind Fernando Bale in the Derby, with other notable performances including a 29.54 victory at Wentworth Park in January.

Bad Boy Sniper, who secured 14 wins and 14 minor placings from 34 starts, will be kept as a pet by his owners.
