Court Upholds GRNSW's Tough Regulatory Action

By GRNSW

On 22 December 2015 in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, his Honour Stevenson J presided over an application brought by greyhound racing participant Harry Sarkis who was seeking orders that an interim suspension issued by a Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Steward be lifted.

The suspension was issued by a Steward in the course of an Inquiry into live baiting. The Inquiry commenced after evidence was given to the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in New South Wales.

In rejecting Mr Sarkis’ application, his Honour handed down the following orders:

1. Mr Sarkis’ summons be dismissed.

2. Mr Sarkis to pay GRNSW’s costs.

GRNSW welcomes the Court’s decision which validates its zero tolerance approach to animal cruelty and its decisive action to safeguard animal welfare and reform the industry.

GRNSW will continue to take swift and deliberate action against any industry participant where there are allegations they have engaged in acts of animal cruelty or other incidents of wrongdoing.
