Azzopardi Lands Another Big Haul

By Jeff Collerson

There are three Wentworth Park meetings remaining in 2015 but Anthony Azzopardi has wrapped up this year's trainers' premiership after landing another four winners on Saturday night.

Azzopardi, who has notched a quartet of victories and three trebles at recent Wentworth Park fixtures, continued his amazing run with Il Bacaro, Asa Flying Spur, Zambora Brockie and Brilliant Shot shooting his 2015 tally up to 47 wins for the year.

Zambora Brockie's effort to give outstanding sprinters Knight Sprite and Black Bear Lee a start and a beating in the Free-For-All was the highlight.

Zambora Brockie clocked fastest time of the night, with 29.80 for the 520m, in scoring his sixth win in nine Wentworth Park appearances and he now reigns as early favourite for the Group 1 National Derby, to be held at headquarters on January 23 and 30.

Whittaker earned a start in the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate at Wentworth Park with his win in Saturday night's 720m AAA Radiator Specialists Series final.

Until recently considered purely a sprinter, Whittaker overcame a bad start to win his heat on December 12 in 42.85 and despite another slow getaway improved his time to 42.57 on Saturday night.

"It's disappointing to see Whittaker miss the jump again but it was pleasing to see how determinedly he went to win," Bruce Fletcher, who handled Whittaker for wife Julie, the dog's trainer, said later.

"When the boxes opened and I saw a wall of dogs ahead of him I could not see how he was going to be able get through the pack.

"But he somehow went from sixth early to leading with a lap to go.

"Our only problem now is finding a race for him between now and the Summer Distance Plate heats on January 9.

"There is a 600m event programmed for Gosford on Sunday but the dog has never seen that track so we're not sure about starting him in that race."

Evergreen sprinter Father Skeeta, who turned four last month, scored his sixth Wentworth Park win when he ran down tearaway leader Stilton Gold in Saturday night's Ladbrokes Bet Better Stakes fourth grade event.

"I believe Father Skeeta is racing so well for his age is because I don't break in my greyhounds too young," owner-trainer Les Dennis, who bred the dog from his Wentworth Park winner Madam Jessie, said after the race.

"Some educate their dogs at 12 or 13 months of age but I don't start that process until they are at least 16 months old and reckon they race longer that way.

"Father Skeeta was nearly 17 months when he was educated and I am about to pick up two youngsters by Lochinvar Marlow from Madam Jessie to have them broken in and they are 19 months of age."

But while Father Skeeta won in a blistering 29.68 at Gosford in July last year he wwill not be contesting Sunday's heats of the Group 2 Woy Woy Poultry Gosford Gold Cup.

"He was in last year's Cup but did no good because at Gosford he would need to draw box one, two or three to have any chance," Dennis said.

"So I'll be nominating him for Saturday night's Wentworth Park meeting instead."

Prancing Tiger gave hobby trainer Scott Tyson, who has only two greyhounds in work at Terrigal, on the central coast, his first city winner at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Prancing Tiger led throughout in a fifth grade, scoring by more than six lengths in a nippy 30.06.

Maitland trainer Peter Neilson is about to campaign for a month in Queensland with his team, including his Saturday night Wentworth Park winner Fab Surfy.

Fab Surfy, resumed from a spell to stage a last-to-first performance in a 520m fifth grade, scoring his 13th win in 32 starts.

Neilson's son MATTHEW is Queensland's leading reinsman who has driven nearly 2000 winners.

"MATTHEW has built 10 kennels for me on his property so I'll give Fab Surfy and a few others a chance to win some races at Albion Park over the next month," Peter Neilson said at Wentworth Park.

See you next week!
