Azzopardi All But Seals Premiership

By Jeff Collerson

Londonderry's Anthony Azzopardi looks to have the 2015 Wentworth Park Trainers' Premiership wrapped up after notching up four winners on Saturday night.

Azzopardi's winners, Asa Unbreakable, Asa Killa Queen and Asa Hard Knox, along with his Vic Peters Classic victor Zambora Brockie, took his Wentworth Park tally for 2015 to 41 winners, five clear of Jodie Lord and Jason Mackay.

Ironically, Lord's husband Andy is a part-owner of three of Azzopardi's winners last Saturday night.

"The ASA Syndicate, which owns Asa Unbreakable, Asa Killa Queen and Asa Hard Knox, takes its name from the first initials of each of the syndicate members' Christian names, which are Andy, Steve and Adam," Azzopardi explained.

Zambora Brockie recorded easily Saturday night's fastest time when he led all the way in the Free For All, clocking 29.59 with a blistering run home time of 11.67.

"When the draw came out I was worried that Black Bear Lee, who had drawn box two and is a hard railer, would hold out Zambora Brockie, who had box one, when the lids lifted," Azzopardi said.

"But Black Bear Lee got a run in the Christmas Gift which left box two vacant, which was a huge plus for Zambora Brockie."

In other news from Wentworth Park on Saturday, Funky Punk earned a start in the Group 2 Woy Woy Poultry Gold Cup heats on December 27 by scoring her sixth Wentworth Park win in Saturday night's Stollery Appreciation Stakes.

Funky Punk can be a risky beginner but on Saturday night was first to hit the ground from box three and led throughout.

"She goes well at Gosford so the Cup looks a perfect race for her," trainer Jim Coyle said.

"Funky Punk loves being drawn near the rails and whenever she is in boxes one, two or three, she is capable of jumping in front like she did tonight."

See you next week!
