Fever Rising For Summer Cup

By Jeff Collerson

Fernando Bale's trainer Andrea Dailly is poised to snare another group race final by taking out Saturday night's Group 3 Summer Cup (720m) with Bourbski Fever.

The winner of the Group 1 Bold Trease Cup at Sandown last month will start favourite in Saturday's event despite finishing only fourth in the heat won by Shoulders.

Bourbski Fever was never out of trouble in the early and middle stages of her heat before flashing home to beat all but the placegetters and just managing to qualify for the final.

Andrea Dailly's husband Tom said he was expecting improvement from Bourbski Fever in the cup final.

"She kept running into dead-ends in her race but is as fresh as a daisy now and raring to go," he said.

"All Bourbski Fever needs is to be left alone early because she gets back in her races, but if the floodgates open and she finds a run she will be hard to beat."

Sydney Cup winner Ada Mary was run down by Serena Nimbus in the fastest heat but looms as Bourbski Fever's main danger.

"She pulled up extra well and while box four is not great for Ada Mary the draw could work out okay," trainer Sharon Grey said.

"Ada Mary likes to have room on her outside and most of the early pace in the Summer Cup final seems to be on her inside.

"This week I will be giving Ada Mary two slips up my straight track, which is not quite 400 metres.

"She won't go behind the lure and although sometimes Ada Mary gets three gallops between races it all depends on her. Ada Mary has a way of telling me how much work she needs."

A great sidelight to Saturday night's Summer Cup card are four heats of the John Stollery Memorial Christmas Gift, which is also a Group 3 event.

Strongest of the qualifying races is heat four, which features Vic Peters Classic winner Zambora Brockie in box six, Brad Hill Billy in two and Kihael Kaluna in box four.

With Cyanide, a slow beginner, in box three and wide running Husvinu in five, Kihael Kaluna could secure a clear run to the first turn.

"I gave him a box to box trial at Wentworth Park on Tuesday night and he went well," Kihael Kaluna's trainer Mark Gatt said. "It all depends on the start because my dog is going to have to jump smartly to be in front of Zambora Brockie at the first turn."

Kihael Kaluna has not started since finishing fourth in a Ballarat Cup heat on November 25.

"Before that he trialled 25.20 at Ballarat and in the Cup heat he missed the start and was checked before running on well so I was happy with his run," Gatt said.

Knight Sprite has not raced for a month but is ready to win heat one of the Christmas Gift according to trainer Gayle Masterson.

"When he won his most recent race at The Gardens on November 6 Knight Sprite got knocked around and pulled up with a sore toe," Masterson said.

"But he is going well again and when I trialled him against the electric timing on my local straight track at Redhead on Tuesday he recorded one of his fastest times."

Up-and-coming sprinter Privacy has a dream draw in box two in heat two of the Gift, where he clashes with the irrepressible Bessy Boo (box five).

Privacy should relish having wide runner Jack Kade in box three and tardy beginner Stench Of Power in one.

Let It Develop, fresh from his track record breaking win in Tuesday's Goulburn Cup final, has drawn his favourite box, number eight, and is my selection to take out heat three of the Gift.

The top two placegetters from each Christmas Gift heat will qualify for next Saturday's final.
