It's A Bird Looking To Soar At Gosford

By Stuart Turner

Trainer Mark Azzopardi believes a tricky draw should not stop It’s A Bird scoring another win at Tuesday night’s Gosford meeting.

It’s A Bird jumps from box five in the 5th Grade Woy Woy Poultry Supplies Stakes (600m, race eight) seeking a ninth win in 16 starts.

The greyhound has been a versatile performer for Azzopardi since transferring from Victoria earlier this year, scoring victories at various distances from 450m to 618m.

This is her first trip to Gosford and Azzopardi is expecting his greyhound to run well.

“She’s a better greyhound than these,” he said. “She’s got a few lengths on them.

“She’s lost a bit of early dash and can be tardy at the start but she still has a great engine.

“As long as she doesn’t get crowded here and gets a clear run, I expect her to win.”

It’s A Bird is part of a strong litter including kennelmate It’s A Jett, who scored a terrific 24.66 win over the 440m at Goulburn last week.

She has not tasted victory in four races but has scored three successive placings and has placed in both of her previous starts wearing the yellow rug.

Azzopardi said he is hoping to score some more victories with It’s A Bird before she returns to Victoria and a possible crack at the major stayers titles there.

“This has been a bit of an education with her,” he said.  “She’s going for what should be ‘easier’  races before going back to Victoria and the 700m.

“I’m not sure she’s quite up to Group standard but she’s very handy and I think she can win again here.”

In other races, La Grand Logie (box three) is off the quick back-up from a strong Wentworth Park victory over the weekend and can triumph again in race six.

Jeff Eaton’s greyhound scored his 15th career win with a solid 30.15 triumph over the 520m and won at his last visit to Gosford on September 29.

Redneck Crazy (box one) has scored five wins and two minor placings from seven starts and looks ideally drawn to win race seven.

Beau Hedley’s greyhound, part of a promising litter including last week’s Maitland Future Stars finalist King Taro, is unbeaten in two starts from this draw.

Goodwin Terry (box seven) has scored four wins and three minor placings from nine starts so far and also looks well drawn to take out race 10.

The son of Magic Sprite and Our Dynamo enjoys being drawn out wide, with three victories from three jumping from box eight, and impressed with a sound 30.33 win at Wentworth Park last month.
