Hay Fergus Aiming For A Happy Return

By Stuart Turner

Hot pup Hay Fergus should attempt his latest comeback at Bulli next Friday night.

The son of Brett Lee and Daydream (pictured with connections), who smashed the Bulli 400m track record in a performance trial in July and is unbeaten in three starts, has not run since his latest victory on September 10.

Trainer Brett May said his injury-hampered star had suffered a  fractured hock, but should get a run over the 400m at the Bulli meeting on Friday, November 6 subject to veterinary checks this week.

Unfortunately, the news is not so good for unlucky NSW star Aphorism.

The son of Collision and Fantasy Royale will likely be retired after breaking a hock while leading in the recent Group 3 Nowra Puppy Spring Classic decider.

Aphorism, who had smashed the Nowra track record the previous week, has 12 wins and nine minor placings from 30 starts.

He has scored victories at five different tracks, won this year’s Group 1 Dapto Megastar Prelude and has a Wentworth Park 520m best time of 29.83.

Trainer Shaun Evans said no final decision on Aphorism’s racing future would be made for six months, but the greyhound will now likely be retired for stud duties.

Two other greyhounds also targeting returns are the John Ayoub-trained NSW standout Dear Darcey and WA star Quartz Bale, from Paul Stuart’s gun kennel.

Quartz Bale, who placed in this year’s Group 1 Perth and Australian cups, has not raced since May due to a hock injury.

Stuart said the greyhound is now back in work and should be trialling shortly.

This year’s Peter Mosman finalist Dear Darcey, who has scored five wins and five minor placings from 15 starts, has not raced since September 1 due to a back muscle injury.

Ayoub said he was hoping to have his greyhound, who also finished second in a heat of the Group 2 Bendigo Cup behind Fernando Bale in June, back racing in about a month’s time.

Meanwhile, Syd Swain said he is planning to take Goldengrove Lad down to Victoria for a possible tilt  at the forthcoming Melbourne Cup preludes at Sandown Park.

Goldengrove Lad extended his record to nine wins and seven minor placings from 31 starts with a 30.08 win over the 520m at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.
