Tommy Brislane Back On The Track

By Jeff Collerson

Two-time Group winner Tommy Brislane makes his long-awaited racing return on Tuesday night.

The 2014 NSW Greyhound of the Year finalist, who has been sidelined with injury for 13 months, makes his much anticipated comeback at Warragul tomorrow night.

A winner of the 2014 Group 1 Dapto Megastar, Group 2 Bob Payne Spring Sprint and more than $160,000 prize money, Tommy Brislane jumps from box five in race seven (460m).

Trainer Steve White reports that while the dog is not yet fully race fit he expects the dog to "give a good account of himself.''

"I trialled Tommy Brislane over 440m at Warragul last Tuesday and he clocked 22.49 which is a smart run," White, who recently moved to Victoria from his former base at Nowra on the NSW South Coast, said.

The Warragul 440m record stands at 22.18 so White is entitled to be satisfied with Tommy Brislane's time.

Considering Tommy Brislane has won 12 of 16 races, mostly against silk department class, he looks well placed in tomorrow night's fourth and fifth grade event.

After originally injuring a stopper bone trialling for last year's Group 1 Topgun, the brilliant speedster's return has been delayed by a succession of niggling injuries.

Wentworth Park fans will get their first look at boom country dog Chevy Prince on Wednesday night.

The son of Fabregas and Chevy Princes, who has won three of his seven starts so far and reached the final of the recent Group 3  Laurie Healion Memorial Maiden, has qualified for the Maitland To Wenty Final (520m).

Last Thursday Chevy Prince led quickly to win his 450m Maitland heat in a slick 24.83, earning himself his first metropolitan outing.

The win was Chevy Prince's second in two starts since resuming from a spell for new trainer Robert Howard.

"I was pleased with his run at Maitland because he came out well and held his line, not wanting to shift up the track,'' Howard said.

"Because the heats were on Thursday there is no opportunity to trial him at Wentworth Park before Wednesday's race but Jason Mackay, his previous trainer, put my mind at ease.

"Jason told me he had once hand-slipped Chevy Prince in a post-to-post hit-out at Wenty so at least the dog knows his way around the track.''

Fantastic Shelly, rated by owner-trainer-breeder Jason Fletcher as potentially the equal of his Dapto record holder Fantastic Dotty, clocked a slick 30.13 in a performance trial at Dapto on Thursday night.

Fantastic Shelly had been sidelined due to soreness in the tibia, on the inside of the leg, but unfortunately has pulled up sore again.

"She will need another couple of weeks off,'' a disappointed Fletcher said.

"I expected her to go a lot faster than 30.13 even though that is a good run for a maiden.

"This sort of puppy soreness can occur with youngsters and at least Fantastic Shelly has time on her side as she is only 18 months of age.''

It is a big effort for a greyhound to earn just on $30,000 from exclusively short course racing but the Allen Ivers-trained Cosmic Halo achieved that with her 28th win in 81 starts at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night.

Although beaten for early pace by her kennelmate Sketchy Hayley, Cosmic Halo knuckled down determinedly to her task to lead turning for home.

She then came away by just over a length in 16.23, the fastest 280m time of the night.
