Sokyo Looking To Step Up At Bulli

By Stuart Turner

Sokyo aims to step up his racing comeback while gun trainer Anthony Azzopardi could be celebrating more success at today’s terrific Bulli meeting.

The Christine Oldfield-trained greyhound jumps from box seven in the www.greyhoundsBulli.com Stakes (400m, race nine) fresh from a decent run last week after almost six months on the sidelines due to injury.

Sokyo ran a strong 22.47 behind flying Estranged last week to continue his strong run at Bulli, where he has scored eight minor placings in nine visits.

A former Wentworth Park winner with eight victories and 13 minor placings from 26 starts, he looks the pick here.

“He came back really well last week,” Ron Oldfield, husband of Christine, said. “He was a few lengths back, but really applied himself well to finish second.

“I’d prefer him on the fence but he’s okay from the outside, so this draw is okay.

“I think he will compete at 500m again. That’s the aim for him with a bit more racing.

“He is looking good and feeling well so I’m sure he can win here.”

This is an intriguing race, with both Gold Miss (box one) and Gun Pizza in box six looking threats.

Neither have terrific records from their respective boxes, though, and Sokyo should have the pace to cut across and lead.

Western Sydney trainer Anthony Azzopardi has enjoyed plenty of success recently and he could score another winner here with Myrniong Plow in race five (472m).

The promising son of Collision and Gotta Be Fancy (box one) has won three of his seven starts so far, including a 26.38 triumph over the 472m wearing the red rug at Bulli last month.

Judith Fisher’s kennel has been strong in 2015 and she could enjoy a double victory here with Priori in race four and Espanyol in race seven.

A son of Magic Sprite and Sheikha, Priori (box four) was a terrific debut winner over the 400m here last week in 22.77.

Espanyol has scored three wins and three minor placings from eight starts and looks a great prospect for Fisher.

The son of Magic Sprite and Hidden Assets has triumphed three times at Bulli, including a 26.14 effort over the 472m in July.

Jason Magri’s Cosmic Break (box seven) looks ideally drawn to win a quality race eight over the 472m.

He is unbeaten in four starts with the black rug and loves Bulli, with three wins from his five visits here so far.
