Magic Can Return At Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Magic Spring blotted his copybook when sixth as a $2.40 favourite at Wentworth Park on September 9 but punters can expect the Noelene Holloway-trained speedster to bounce back from box three in the Rapidvite Free-For-All (race six, 520m) on Wednesday night.

While Whittaker (pictured) will have support after drawing box one, Magic Spring, chasing his ninth win in 14 appearances at the track, is also nicely placed in three.

Whittaker is unbeaten in three starts from the rails draw but Magic Spring is poised to get a clear run as Princess Fox, a keen railer in box two, consistently clocks sub-5.40 first splits at Wentworth Park.

Princess Fox is likely to crowd Whittaker and give Magic Spring, who likes room to move on his outside and relishes going around his rivals, a perfect passage in the rush to the first turn.

Keroma Storm has not raced or trialled at Wentworth Park but owner Ray Pitstock, whose wife Susan trains the dog, believes that lack of experience will not affect his chances in the APL Poker Stakes (race two, 520m).

The greyhound, whose provincial record is five wins and four placings from 14 starts, is well drawn in box seven according to Ray Pitstock.

"Susan and I like him drawn out wide,'' he said. "Keroma Storm has got into the habit of going around the other dogs but he will take a rails run if it is there.

"We think Wentworth Park will suit him because he loves tight tracks.

"For example, his best times have been at Gosford rather than Maitland or even Richmond and if he gets a clear run I'll be surprised if his opponents can hold him out at Wentworth Park.''

Fab Surfy recorded a sizzling 29.74 at Wentworth Park on June 5 and trainer Peter Neilson says his greyhound is going "just as well now'' as he prepares for Wednesday night's AAA Radiator Specialist Stakes.

"He has not raced at Wenty for a while because I wanted to take his mind off that track and concentrate on races like last month's Black Top at The Gardens with him,'' Neilson said.

"But he is going as well as he has ever gone and from box three Fab Surfy should be able to rail up nicely in the run to the first turn.''

One Hill clocked a blistering 29.45 to run down Anita May in the fastest heat but the runner-up's trainer believes she can turn the tables in Wednesday's Gosford To Wenty Final.

"Anita May has not seen Wentworth Park but she has gone well on every track I have taken her to first up,'' trainer Barry West said.

"I'm happy with box three as I didn't want box one because Anita May likes room to move in the early stages of her races.

"One Hill is obviously going to be hard to beat but he has box five and apparently he does not always begin as well as he did at Gosford when he ran down Anita May.

"After the race One Hill's trainer Charlie Lamb told me he could not believe how well his dog had jumped.

"I'm not concerned about Anita May tackling 520m as she will run it out strongly enough.''
