Megastar Up Next For Bessy Boo

By Jeff Collerson

Just over 24 hours after being selected to contest the Group 1 Dapto Megastar, Bessy Boo celebrated by scoring win number 28 at his 92nd start on Saturday night.

After jumping smartly but being beaten for early speed, Bessy Boo (pictured) railed up to be second behind Black Lagoon on the back straight, grabbing the lead soon after before running away for a nine length win in the Wentworth Park Free-For-All.

The Christine Proctor-trained dog took his Wentworth Park tally to 15 wins from 57 appearances, stopping the clock at 29.67, a mere 0.09 wide of his personal best time at the track.

After the race Proctor revealed that Bessy Boo had never even trialled at Dapto, let alone raced at the Megastar venue.

"So I will need to take him there for a trial later this week," Proctor said.

Saturday was a night trainer George Borg would probably rather forget as he finished a close second with his greyhounds Gate Juan and Mystagogy while he "won" with Pedagogy only to have that win declared null and void when stewards declared the event a no race.

The no race decision was the only possible verdict after a piece of the mechanical lure became dislodged in the straight and severely baulked tearaway leader Tiger's Hero.

Borg was at first bewildered at Pedagogy losing his fourth Wentworth Park win but after watching a replay of the race was satisfied the stewards had made the correct decision.

Tiger's Hero was around four lengths' clear of Pedagogy when the squeaker box fell off the lure and that distraction undoubtedly contributed to the Frank Hurst-trained dog's defeat.

Among Saturday night's most impressive wins was the powerful performance of Wentworth Park newcomer Lochinvar Amour in a heat of the Evans & Son Jewellers Bitches' Series.

Trained by Robert Smith, Lochinvar Amour was checked at the start and was fourth on the back straight but swept around the pacemakers effortlessly to be a close second behind Mrs Huang on the home turn.

Lochinvar Amour then accelerated away to win by nearly three lengths in the fair time of 30.22.

"I have always had a high opinion of Lochinvar Amour but that win surprised me because she had never seen Wentworth Park, even in a trial," Smith said after the race.

"But I have won twice at Wentworth Park with her kennelmate Lochinvar Holly and Lochinvar Amour has always been a couple of lengths quicker than her.

"With another two or three runs under her belt I think Lochinvar Amour could develop into a top flight greyhound."

Body And Soul, a litter brother and kennelmate to outstanding Youngster Black Bear Lee, scored a first-up Wentworth Park win in Saturday's final event for trainer Ruth Matic.

"Body And Soul has always been a fast dog but he doesn't possess the terrific temperament of Black Bear Lee," Matic said.

"Whereas Black Bear Lee is always totally relaxed, Body And Soul is over the top and tries too hard, gets too excited, so sometimes finds trouble in his races."

Brad Barber, who runs his own house painting business, declared Rainmaker Lass the best greyhound he has had in his seven years as a hobby trainer after the greyhound led virtually all the way in an Evans & Son Jewellers heat.

Rainmaker Lass has had only six starts for Barber for five wins and a third, a remarkable achievement.

"I own Fraudulent, which is trained by my mate Justin King and he is quicker, but Rainmaker Lass is the fastest I have trained myself," Barber said on Saturday night.

King, who won Saturday night's opening event with Miss Dover, plans to start Miss Sueko in Thursday night's Dapto Megastar Preludes.

Biggest run among the beaten greyounds on Saturday night was the second placing by Young Gun behind Myalla Monaro in a fifth grade event.

After being last early, Young Gun ran off and collided at the first turn and still had only one greyhound behind him entering the back straight.

He rattled home to be beaten less than three lengths to record his fourth placing in five Wentworth Park 520m appearances.

See you next week!
