Wilcox Naturally Expects More Wins

By Jeff Collerson

Wins by Natural Player at Goulburn last Tuesday and by Knocka's Return at Dapto 48 hours later have taken the tally of victories recorded by just five members of a single litter prepared by Mark Wilcox to 103.

The amazing March 2011 litter sired by Knocka Norris from  Winning Shiraz include Knocka's Return, who has won 29 of 77 starts, Natural Player, whose boasts a phenomenal strike rate of 32 wins from 56 outings and Highly Respected, who has won 27 of his 62 appearances.

Buster Shiraz and Cool Maddie Ross, from the same litter and also trained by Wilcox, have won 11 and four races respectively.

And while they turned four in March and are still racing with great dash, Wilcox has six worthy replacements for the likes of Natural Player and Knocka's Return.

"Winning Shiraz's next litter, by Magic Sprite, are 21 months old and are just starting their careers,'' Wilcox, who is based at Bringelly in western Sydney, said.

"First to race was Sweetwater Boy, who clocked 22.76 in a 400m performance trial at Bulli and finished second in 22.68 there at his first race on August 14.

"His brother Titan Sprite was second, beaten one-and-a-half lengths in his performance trial at Bulli with the winner clocking 22.66.

"The six youngsters I have from the litter are all going well and I expect them to win races.''

Syd Swain is planning to nominate four greyhounds for Saturday afternoon's heats of the Bankstown City Cup, hoping to emulate his brother-in-law Ron Field's win with Media Ban in the 2013 final.

Front-running Media Ban was well suited by the 530m grass surface on the tight Potts Park circuit and Swain believes Silver Label especially will be hard to beat in this year's series.

"I intend trialling Silver Label, his sister White Label, Sweet Runner and Goldengrove Lad, who won for me at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night, at Potts Park tomorrow night,'' Swain said.

"If they go well enough I'll be entering all four for Saturday afternoon's heats.

"Silver Label has won 21 of his 50 starts and I think Potts Park will suit him so I rate him my best chance.

"White Label has won seven races and Sweet Runner, who has won six fom 23 starts, is very quick early so should be suited at Potts Park too.

"She is just back from a seasonal spell and has been a bit sour but should come good.

"Goldengrove Lad is the quickest of them all and he had won at Wentworth Park in 29.83 before he won there in 29.96 on Wednesday. But his record of six wins from 23 starts doesn't reflect his true ability.

"When I put him around Glengarrie Trial Track the proprietors Steve and Mark Farrugia are invariably in awe of the times he produces so I know he has the talent.''

Surfection, whose career got off to a flying start with a Laurie Healion Memorial Maiden Classic heat win in July 2014, will make his Wentworth Park debut shortly providing he stays sound.

The Cliff Clark-trained sprinter was an impressive wiinner in a slick 25.14 in a 450m heat at Maitland last Wednesday and will contest the final on Thursday.

"All being well I'll bring him to Wentworth Park a couple of weeks after that,'' Clark said.

While he turns three in November, Surfection has had a mere 14 starts due to injuries.

"He is a very fast dog but while his litter brothers Happy Haswell and Good Call Paul have been starring in Queensland, Surfection has spent most of his time sitting in his kennel," Clark said.
