Trying Times For Tommy

By Stuart Turner

Tommy Brislane’s potential racing return has again suffered a blow but there is better news for another of last year’s stars.

A two-time Group winner and 2014 NSW Greyhound of the Year finalist (pictured, white rug), Tommy Brislane has been battling to return to the track since being injured almost a year ago.

The son of Premier Fantasy and Mary Virginia, who has won 12 of 16 starts and collected more than $160,000 in prize-money, had trialled superbly at Bulli recently after enduring an injury-hampered comeback.

Trainer Steve White has reported, though, that Tommy Brislane has now suffered a suspected twisted wrist and will need a break from training.

Lucy Lobster, however, continues her racing return this Saturday.

The daughter of Brett Lee and One Tree Hill has suffered an injury-hampered few months since winning last year’s Group 1 Vic Peters Classic for NSW trainer Charlie Lamb.

Now under the mentorship of gun Victorian trainer Robbie Britton, she recorded an encouraging 29.63 win over the 515m at Sandown Park on her return earlier this month before finishing seventh last Thursday at the same venue.

She goes again over 525m at The Meadows this Saturday (race 5).

Meanwhile, last year’s Group 2 $40,000-to-the-winner Black Top winner and Group 3 Ladies Bracelet placegetter Rose Of Galo has been retired due to a back injury.

The daughter of El Galo and Noir Rose, who record 23 victories from 68 starts, gave Queensland owner-trainer Alby Kennewell his biggest triumph in the sport with victory in last year’s Black Top decider at Unibet Gardens.

“She gave me fantastic enjoyment,” Kennewell said. “I still think about her run (at The Gardens) a lot.

“She was such a reliable greyhound. She would always ping the lids and would lead any field.

“I think she gets a bit upset when she sees her kennelmates going off to race. She still bounces around like she’s ready to go.”

Kennewell said Rose Of Galo would likely be mated with Don’t Knocka Him, a winner of 25 races from 51 starts.

Meanwhile,  Are Jai Que (box eight) goes in race six at Unibet Gardens this Friday ahead of a likely  crack at this year’s Black Top.

This will be a debut run at the Newcastle track for Michael Clayton’s boom greyhound, who has 19 wins and eight minor placings from 29 starts.

Are Jai Que last ran at Wentworth Park on August 1, with Clayton indicating he would now be aimed for the Black Top heats on August 21.

In other news, NSW racing fans may get another chance to see superstar Fernando Bale in action.

Dapto club officials have indicated Expression of Interest forms will be sent to trainer Andrea Dailly for next month’s Group 1 Megastar.

Both Fernando Bale and kennelmate Dyna Double One would be among the favourites for the $75,000 top prize if in the field.

The Megastar prelude takes place on September 3, with the final on September 11.
