Kevin In Bangkok Looks Exciting Prospect

By Jeff Collerson

Anthony Azzopardi has ambitious plans for Kevin In Bangkok after his consistent contender scored another impressive victory.

The greyhound took his tally to four wins and three seconds from his past seven starts with a runaway win over 450m at Maitland last Thursday.

Kevin In Bangkok was second early but took the lead in the middle stages to win in a nippy 25.28.

"He is a nice young dog but whether he will run 520 metres at Wentworth Park is up in the air,'' Azzopardi said.

"At Wenty Kevin In Bangkok would really burn for the first three sections but I'm uncertain about his stamina.

"I believe he is an ideal type for Group Two races like the 460m Warragul Cup in January, 450m Shepparton Cup in February and next year's 450m Maitland Cup, run in late March and early April.''

Kihael Kaluna, the $120,000 venture into greyhound racing by Australian Bloodstock, owners of 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, will be sidelined while he undergoes a tonsillectomy.

"His tonsils have been giving him a lot of trouble for some time so I've decided the best course of action is to have them removed,'' trainer Mark Gatt said.

Kihael Kaluna began his career with a bang, winning a Wentworth Park maiden heat and final in sizzling times for trainer Kim Hyde before being sold.

The dog last raced on July 23 at Maitland when he failed to beat one home after finding all sorts of trouble in a rough house affair.

Primary school teacher Amy Bennett, owner-trainer of Serena Fly High,  recently refused a mammoth $70,000 offer for her exciting speedster.

Serena Fly High has been a hugely impressive recent performer, securing six wins and two minor placings from her 15 starts so far.

"My father Vince thought I was mad but I decided to hang on to Serena Fly High,'' Bennett said.

"Serena Fly High is the last daughter of the my father's wonderful racer Sky Fly High, who is at the end of her breeding career.

"That, rather than Serena Fly High's race form, was the main reason I decided against selling.''

Despite being an extremely wide runner, Sky Fly High won 18 races and was equally proficient at sprint and middle distance racing.

Serena Fly High, at 26 months of age, has the potential to be even better.

Serena Fly High was never in the hunt after bungling the start in Saturday's Phil Davis Memorial but she has won at Richmond in 30.45 and 30.46.

She won her maiden race at Wentworth Park in 29.82 and scored in three successive Cannington (WA) races in June.

Although only 21, Amy Bennett is an experienced trainer.

She prepared her parents' greyhound Nat's The One to win the 2011 Gosford Goldmine while she was a 17-year-old year 12 high school student.

Bennett was thrown into the deep end after her parents, Robyn and Vince had been committed to an overseas holiday in the weeks leading up to the big Gosford race.

Amy was given the job of training Nat's The One between school and homework and won six races in a row with the family's smart speedster.

The theory that only lightly raced greyhounds make successful mothers was again proved wrong when Noelene Holloway's duo Magic Spring and Queen Marina landed another double at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night.

Magic Spring is from the second and Queen Marina from the first litter whelped by FasciNate Marina, who had a whopping 125 starts!

Magic Spring has now won six of nine Wentworth Park races while Queen Marina, a litter sister to Queen Esther, was the NSW representative in last year's National Distance Championship and has been successful in 11 of 89 outings.

She has earned $46,000 in prizemoney.
