Brad Hill Billy Heads Sprint Contenders

By Stuart Turner

Current hot shot Brad Hill Billy, always-dangerous No Donuts and Group 1 winner Zipping Midge head a super list of contenders for this Saturday’s Ladbrokes NSW Sprint Championship (520m) Heats.

Flying pair Shady Ace and Opus Forte, terrific veteran Bessy Boo and Group 2 winner Spacecraft also feature among the four Heats of the state title at Wentworth Park.

Heat one should see a great battle between Knight Sprite in box three and Jewel Action, a regular Wentworth Park winner, in box seven.

The one to back here, though, looks like Rare Pearl (box four), who ran a stunning 29.58 here last Saturday night.

Heat two features the in-form Brad Hill Billy, who earned himself the tag of favourite for the NSW title with his brilliant 29.37 run here last Saturday night.

He jumps from box three, from which he has a limited record of one placing from three previous starts.

Smart Missile, a 29.65 greyhound here, has box one and with his strong record from the inside looks a big danger.

Last year’s NSW and overall Nationals winner Chica Destacada has box four here and must be considered, although she finished almost eight lengths behind Brad Hill Billy last Saturday.

No Donuts jumps from box seven in the third Heat and is a considerable threat from a wide draw.

He should have benefited from two weeks away from the track after a busy campaign which included reaching the final of the Peter Mosman Classic.

Spacecraft (box six) is dangerous but will need an improvement after going winless since his Maitland Cup victory in May.

Opus Forte (box four) looks the favourite after hitting top form recently, including scoring a 29.53 win here on July 22.

Bessy Boo (box two) can never be discounted while a decent value pick here is Nightwatchman (box eight), who has been running solidly recently.

He has a best of 29.69 here and has scored three of his nine career wins at Wentworth Park.

Shady Ace (box one) has earned three successive Wentworth Park triumphs recently and looks a hot pick to make it four in the fourth Heat.

She should be too good for a field including this year’s Group 1 National Futurity winner Zipping Midge (box four, pictured with white rug) and former gun Albion Park performer Elusive Desire in box five.

Saturday also sees two very even-looking Heats of the NSW Distance titles at Wentworth Park over the 720m.

Smooth Number and Lithgow Panther look the winners in these.

Winners of the state titles earn places in the Group 1 National Sprint and Distance finals, which take place at Wentworth Park on Saturday, August 22.

Both races offer a $75,000 top prize.
