Brett Hoping To Make Hay At Bulli

By Stuart Turner

Record-breaker Hay Fergus makes his competitive debut in the second race at Bulli tonight and looks ready to unleash his explosive potential.

The boom pup jumps from box eight in the Aus-Pump Concrete Services Maiden (400m) fresh from his stunning 22.14 Performance trial run at the track earlier this month.

Hay Fergus, a son of legendary Brett Lee and 2010 National Futurity winner Daydream, knocked 0.06 off Barcia Bale’s previous 400m record at Bulli with that terrific effort.

It was the latest in a succession of notable trials for the newcomer – and trainer Brett May believes there could be more good runs to come.

“It was exciting but I wasn’t overly shocked,” May said. “When he was 18 months he ran a 22.38 here.

“I hadn’t had him back (at Bulli) for six months but I thought he could do well.

“I’m happy with box eight here. He should be able to stay out of trouble and lead.

“Having said that, when you have box eight at Bulli then you have to do everything right.

“I’m happy with the way he is going and keen to see how he does.”

Hay Fergus first caught the eye with a strong 24.98 PT run at Maitland in March.

His progress since then has been hampered by a torn hip support and a metatarsal injury, but he looks back to full fitness now.

“He’s had his fair share of injuries but at the moment he is 100 per cent right,” May said.

“It’s pretty nerve-racking when you are getting raps like this on a greyhound. You just hope he can stay fit and well.

“I know he can run the 500 as he trialled well at the Gardens over that distance.

“As far as he can improve, who knows – but he looks handy.”

Daydream, a daughter of Bit Chili and Stresa, enjoyed six triumphs at Wentworth Park among her 14 victories from 27 starts.

Twerky (box six) has run two good races so far at Bulli but Hay Fergus, who finished almost 15 lengths ahead of the rest in his record-breaking PT at Bulli, should be too good for the rest here.

Rocky’s Empire and Country Fox both look drawn well with the red rug to win races three and six respectively.

Promising Espanyol (box two) looks a strong chance in race seven, while Your Shout Punk, a member of an exciting new litter for Jimmy Coyle, can win race ten from box six.
