Alfie Small, one of the Northern Rivers' best known greyhound racing identities, has passed away.

The Ballina-based owner and trainer died on Sunday morning aged 88.

Trainer Dave Irwin, who had worked alongside Small in the sport, said his colleague would be fondly remembered by all those he had met in greyhound racing.

"He had friends in the sport all over Australia and helped a lot of people over the years,'' Irwin said.

"I trained Carlyle Tycoon for him and that dog was a finalist in the Village Green Sprinters Cup at the Grafton Winter Carnival on Wednesday.

"Jessie Small, who Alfie owned and trained, won at Casino last Thursday.

"She was the last greyhound he ever started in race.''
