Fernando Bale Aims For More Group Glory

By Stuart Turner

Champion greyhound Fernando Bale will be back in action this Saturday night at The Meadows after he took out the Group 2 Bendigo Cup on Friday.

Andrea Dailly's flying superstar (pictured) cemented his claims as possibly the greatest greyhound of all-time with yet another sparkling victory in the Group 2 Southern Cross Ten Bendigo Cup (425m) last Friday night.

The victory made it 15 consecutive triumphs and six Group titles in 2015 for the son of Kelsos Fusileer and Chloe Allen, who has captivated racing fans across the country with his extraordinary achievements.

Dailly’s brother-in-law George, who handled Fernando Bale at Bendigo, confirmed the greyhound will race in this Saturday night's Group 1 Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic (525m) heats at The Meadows this Saturday night.

“Yes, that’s still the plan,” Dailly said.

“He pulled up okay from the run at Bendigo. He seems fine in himself and there’s nothing wrong with him.

“We still think there’s plenty of racing left in him yet (and) he looks good to go again.”

Fernando Bale put in another faultless display to claim yet another title at Bendigo.

Jumping from box three as the overwhelming $1.20 favourite, he cruised home more than 11 lengths in 24.40 to claim the $47,000 top prize.

The time was just outside his track record of 23.86, set in last week’s heats on his first look at the track.

Shared Equity put in a valiant display to finish second, with Breathing Fire third.

The victory further underlined Fernando Bale’s status not only as Australia top current greyhound, but possibly the sport’s best-ever campaigner.

It was a 23rd victory in 28 starts for the 28-month-old and took Fernando Bale’s career earnings past $680,000 already.

The win at Bendigo also sent social media into a frenzy, with Fernando Bale one of Australia’s most trended topics on Twitter after the race.

Most of Australia’s best sprinters will likely assemble for the three-week Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic series, which offers $100,000 to the winner.

The semis take place on Saturday week, with the decider on Saturday, July 25.
