Garry's Glee With Treble

By Jeff Collerson

Nowra's Garry Edwards landed his first winning treble in 35 years' training when Deeborose and siblings Twist Me Over and Aisle Tifi scored at his home track last Monday.

Deeborose won in a sizzling 29.90 while Twist Me Over and Aisle Tifi covered the 520m in slick figures of 30.04 and 30.11 respectively.

Edwards, who began training his first greyhound in 1980, was delighted with the achievement.

"I have had a winning double but last Monday was my first treble," he said.  "I got a real buzz out of it, especially as I have only six greyhounds in work.

"Deeborose's win was especially gratifying because earlier in her career she struggled to run 365 metres, now she has won in fast time over 520m.

"She has gradually got stronger as she has matured.

"Deeborose is owned by Bruce Davis, a National Broadband manager, who has raced a few greyhounds in the past.''

Edwards, who has been having a great run at Wentworth Park with Shady Ace, the star of his small team, won fame as the trainer of outstanding greyhounds More Space and Double Twist.

He landed his biggest pay cheque when Miss Megastar collected $40,000 as winner of the 2004 Dapto Puppy Auction Classic.

Cosmic Ben, a $4000 "ready to race'' purchase, became trainer Ivan Thelander's first greyhound in more than 40 years in the sport to win three races in succession when he led throughout at Wentworth Park last Monday night.

Cosmic Ben won at Goulburn on May 26 and put in a repeat performance at Maitland on June 17 before scoring a half length win over Grin To Win on Monday.

Although a February, 2011, whelping, Cosmic Ben has had just 49 starts for 13 wins and 20 placings.

"He lost 12 months of his racing career through tearing a hip support, not once, but twice,'' Thelander said.

"Cosmic Ben is a litter brother to Kevin Johnson's outstanding bitch Rose Sannette and I bought him for only $4000 after watching him contest trials at Wauchope and Taree.

"He and Rose Sannette trialled identical time on the same day at Taree so Kevin was very generous in selling Cosmic Ben to me for such a modest price.''

Thelander, who trains at suburban Greenacre, has led a colourful life and during the 1960s travelled around NSW as a fighter with the legendary Jimmy Sharman's boxing tent shows.

Awesome Project, who won 31 of 69 starts and was a Group race winner, has been retired after dropping a hind leg muscle at Gosford last Tuesday night.

The greyhound was involved in a first turn Collision in a heat of the 600m JB Lodge Series and suffered the injury during that fracas.

The son of Collision and Honour Phase retires as a winner of more than $357,000 in stakes.

Awesome Project's greatest career moment came when he won the Group 2 Woy Woy Poultry Supplies Gosford Cup in January 2014, defeating a field including Magic Display and Hurricane Rino.

He secured five Wentworth Park victories, including a 29,94 run over the 520m last month.

Awesome Project's triumphs also included wins in strong company at The Meadows, Sandown Park and Albion Park.

Owner-trainer Brad Canty said Awesome Project will stay at his Aberglasslyn home as a pet.

Londonderry trainer Frank Hurst produced a promising pup at Dapto on Thursday when Good Odds Ocker, a half-brother to his mate Jimmy Coyle's top grader Evil Punk, won a 520m performance trial in a slick 30.01.

Just 20 months old and making his first public appearance, Good Odds Ocker, by Spring Gun from Coyle's wonderful brood bitch Punk Angel, ran down Cleanser's kennelmate Lustrous in the last few strides.
