Reventon Goes For The Hat-Trick At Goulburn

By Stuart Turner

Charlie Riccio is trying to play it cool with his exciting newcomer Reventon but believes the eye-catching newcomer can score another win at Goulburn today.

The promising pup, who is unbeaten in two starts so far, jumps from box one in the Goulburn GBOTA Novice Final (350m, race eight).

Reventon has clocked two sub-20 second races so far, including a terrific 19.79 win here last week.

Black Nero (box two) and Cool Maddie Ross in box three both look dangerous but southern Sydney-based trainer Riccio thinks his greyhound can complete the hat-trick.

“I couldn’t be happier with him,” he said.

“He needs a couple of yards to get going, but once he hits the ground he flies.

“He isn’t a mad railer but I’m happy he has the one box – it means somebody else hasn’t.

“If you get carried away with greyhounds then they make liars of you but I’m reasonably confident here.”

Reventon is part of a litter from handy mother Pie Thief, a former Wentworth Park winner.

The pup’s father is notable sire Barcia Bale, a Group 1 winner who won 13 of 14 races in a short but brilliant career.

Riccio said his pup will likely next have a crack over the longer distances at Bulli.

Reventon is owned by Riccio’s son MATTHEW, a first grade Helensburgh Tigers player and Cronulla Sharks junior.

Riccio senior bought his first greyhound in 1972 as a teenager and said he still loves the sport now.

“I don’t like golf and I don’t like fishing,” the 57-year-old said. “I’ve had cancer and open heart surgery (so) I just like pottering around with my greyhounds.

“Of course everyone likes to win - when mine win it’s the best feeling in the world – but I’m not here to make a living out of it. When mine don’t win, I don’t pull my hair out.

“Everyone who is involved with greyhounds knows what beautiful creatures they are.

“I love them.”

In other action at Goulburn, Lewis Galea’s returning track specialist Monster Storm looks the one to back in race seven.

Max Destruction, who has won five of his first seven starts for Paul Blackmore, looks the bet of the day in race nine.

Margaret Greer scored a double at Goulburn last week and should be celebrating again with Watta Barghest (race six).
