Fun Boss Aims To Rule Again At Cannington

By Stuart Turner

Fun Boss is giving his connections the ride of their life and he looks a good chance to get another win at Cannington on Saturday.

The classy sprinter, who defeated a field including gun Victorian Dyna Double One to win a thrilling $40,000-to-the-winner Group 2 WA Derby last month, jumps from box three in the Gibbons Holden Gosnells Stakes (race four, 530m).

Fun Boss faces a tough field here including exciting pup Party Hotshot (box two), who has run 29.91 at Cannington.

Owner Mike Pollard, whose partner Lexia Isaac trains Fun Boss, thinks his greyhound can make it 11 wins from 19 starts here.

“I think this is a stronger race than the Derby,” he said. “Party Hotshot is a very smart pup.

“The thing about Fun Boss is he always jumps well. It’s only later in races that he musters.

“If he starts like he can and runs 30.20, which he is capable of, then Party Hotshot will have to run 30.10 to beat him.

“I definitely think Fun Boss can win here.”

Highly consistent Fun Boss has failed to win or place only once so far in his eye-catching career.

He won again at Cannington earlier this month over the 530m in 30.20 for a third victory in his last four starts.

Pollard has been breeding greyhounds for about 20 years and said the couple had been delighted with the “electric” victory in the Derby.

Fun Boss was a $30.20 shot but beat Dyna Double One by a nose to win.

“It was a brilliant night,” Pollard said.

“We’ve had greyhounds in the Perth Cup and other big races, but this was the biggest one we’ve won ourselves.

“When he crossed the (greyhound wearing) red, I thought, ‘heck, they’re not going to catch him’. It was tremendous.

“It was more satisfying to win with one we’ve bred ourselves. The thrill of a win like this was superb.”

Classy Astronomize defeated a strong field here last week and looks one of the night’s top picks in race five.

Best bet of the night looks like Showtime Mystery, who jumps from box one in the eighth race.

The CHRIS Halse-trained sprinter is a rare winner but pinged the lids here two starts back and with this draw can triumph again.

Sabre Island looks well suited to the 642m and from box two can win the night’s third race over that distance.
