Britton Duo Primed For WA Oaks Final

By Jess Moran

Astute Victorian trainer Jeff Britton filled the minor placings in last year’s Group 2 WA Oaks and is confident of going one better in this year’s version which is taking place at Cannington on Saturday night.

Britton missed out on the top honour in the 2014 WA Oaks when Oakvale Destiny and Mepunga Hayley ran second and third respectively.

In this year's final, Britton has Weblec Belle and West On Delly in contention for the $40,000-to-the-winner title.

Weblec Belle is likely to start favourite for the race after an impressive all-the-way victory in the heats last week.

Britton is confident his greyhound will be in with a good shot after gaining valuable track experience during the heats.

"She'll have to do everything right but with her strong run home I think she could be tough to beat," Britton said.

"Obviously the local greyhounds will have an advantage after racing regularly there, but now she's had a run a track it will benefit her."

Weblec Belle has drawn box two on Saturday night, a draw Britton is surprisingly not all that content with.

"She moves off to the middle of the track a little bit so I tend to like her drawn in one of the middle boxes," he said.

"That being said though, it's not a bad draw and I'm hoping her on the inside will help her come out better this week."

West On Delly is Britton's other representative in the final after a hard fought win in her heat last week.

However, her trainer expects the race to be a much more difficult affair for her after drawing box eight.

"The eight at Cannington is a terrible box and that will disadvantage her but she has been around Cannington a lot more so she knows the track," Britton said.

"I think her experience at the track really helped her last week in the heats so you never know what she could do on Saturday.

"She has got the pace to come out with them but with the draw you're relying on there being some trouble on the inside so she can cross."

Britton admits he hasn't had time to study the race, however, he believes Real Flash (box five) looks like a danger after she scored a seven and a half length victory in her heat.

"I don't really know a lot of the local dogs in the final, but Real Flash ran a good time last week and looked solid," he said.

"I don't think she has drawn as well this week which could a problem for her though."

In other racing at Cannington on Saturday night, Can Torque will be looking to re-establish the form that saw him break the 588m track record two starts back after he struggled over the 530m last week.

Miss Trinidad lead all the way for an impressive victory last week in a time of 41.82 and will look to back up that performance in race race six from box one.

She will meet much more difficult opposition this week but has drawn favourably in the red and is capable of leading all the way.
