Paua Shot On Target For Victory

By Jeff Collerson

Paua Shot should only needs to reproduce his May 4 Nowra performance to have no trouble opening his Wentworth Park account in Friday night’s Nowra To Wenty Final.

Paua Shot won his heat at Nowra last Monday in 29.97 while Hawaii Lightning led throughout in the other heat in 30.18.

But it was Paua Shot’s previous win at Nowra which makes the youngster look a safe bet on Friday night.

Paua Shot came from second early to win over the 520m trip in a blistering 29.84, posting sensational run-home figures.

“He came home in 12.74sec which is pretty good considering Fantastic Spiral came home in 12.84sec when he won the Nowra Puppy Classic final,’’ Glen Goodwin, whose wife Robyn trains Paua Shot said.

“Paua Shot had box six when he won on May 4 but has never had box eight, the draw he has on Friday.

“He has spent most of his life in boxes five and six so Robyn and I can’t be certain how he will handle the outside draw.

“But he will go straight from the boxes to the first turn, he won’t crash across towards the rails.

“I think the only way he will find trouble is if one of his rivals who has had no Wentworth Park experience runs off the track at the first turn.

“That is our dog’s other advantage, he has had two races and a couple of trials at Wenty so he knows his way around the place.’’

Punters who supported Winsome Amanda when she was sent out a $1.70 favourite at Wentworth Park earlier this month should stick with the Melinda Finn-trained greyhound in Friday’s fourth heat of the Ladbrokes 2-5 Wins Series.

Winsome Amanda had box seven when she finished fourth to Mizzou Tiger on May 4 but has box three on Friday.

“She has drawn much better this week because she is desperate for an inside box,’’ Melinda Finn said.

“I couldn’t believe she was at such a short price at her last Wenty start because she faced a huge task from her wide alley.

“Her third placing to Fancy Top in a heat of the Richmond Oaks last week, from box four, was a really good run and Friday night’s race looks a lot easier.’’

Awesome Project turned four in March but the dog is “flying’’ in preparation for Friday night’s gapsnsw.com.au Masters Stakes.

That’s the declaration from owner-trainer Brad Canty, who has earned more than $350,000 prizemoney from his dog’s 30 wins in 66 starts.

Despite Awesome Project’s advancing age Canty expected him to win on Friday.

“He has box six but Here’s Skeeta, who has drawn seven, goes fast early and should get out of my dog’s way in the run to the first turn.

Awesome Project looks well placed in this race and he is probably entitled to be a $1.30 or even $1.20 favourite.’’

Friday’s star bet should be the wide running Ryley Sams, well boxed in six in heat two of the Ladbroke’s, while Le Burglar, despite taking a tumble at his past two starts, represents good value in the AAA Radiator Specialists Stakes.

Le Burglar will relish the small field of seven and the 29.83sec he clocked at WP in August is clearly faster than any of his opponents’ quickest time.

Best Bet: Ryley Sam (Race 7)

Best Value: Le Burglar (Race 10)
