Is Nymeria The Next Superstar?

By Jeff Collerson

Cleanser attracted bids of about $150,000 after winning his maiden race at Dapto in 29.50 on April 9 so owner-trainer Ken Burnett can expect plenty of buyer interest in the unraced Nymeria, who posted identical figures in a 520m performance trial there on Thursday night.

Nymeria, a December 2012 whelping by Spring Gun from Sierra-lee">Sierra">Sierra Lee, disputed the early lead in a two dog trial before careering away from the first turn to win by a big space.

Considering top grade Wentworth Park sprinter Are Jip, who has won seven metropolitan races, took 29.60 to win the main sprint at the same meeting, Nymeria has a big future.

The greyhound had finished fourth in a performance trial at Bulli in December but had not stepped onto a track again until Thursday night.

“I was getting her ready for the Magic Maiden series at Wentworth Park’s Golden Easter Egg carnival but in a trial there she cracked a fibula and a tibia on the same leg so had to miss that event,’’ Burnett said.

“I wasn’t surprised at what she ran in the Dapto performance trial as she had clocked 22.29 in a 400m trial at Richmond beforehand.

Nymeria is being set for an upcoming $10,000 maiden event at Wentworth Park but she is for sale if the price is right.’’

Remarkably Nymeria was produced by a giveaway brood greyhound.

Elizabeth and Peter Bont gave me Sierra-lee">Sierra">Sierra Lee to breed with on condition they got two pups from her first litter.

“The greyhounds I raced from Sierra-lee">Sierra">Sierra Lee’s first litter are the Wentworth Park winners Chilli Sierra and Eddard Stark while Nymeria is from her second whelping to Spring Gun.’’

Ray Steele, who owns Golden Easter Egg finalist Ronray Spirit, presented that dog’s litter brother Kosie Kashkow to Ambarvale trainer Janel Erwin as a gift.

And on Thursday night at Dapto Kosie Kashkow took his record to six wins and 10 placings from 34 starts when he won a 297m event in 17.30.

A specialist over the Wentworth Park 280m and Dapto 297m journeys, Kosie Kashkow is bred in the purple as he is also a litter brother to Steele’s former brilliant speedster Ronray Miss.

“I had sold Janel Erwin a blue dog and when it went blind I offered her Kosie Kashkow as a replacement for no charge,’’ Ray Steele said.

“I was up front about it and told Janel he was not my type of greyhound because he was only a short course dog but she is having a lot of fun with him.’’

Paul Blackmore has been training just two years but when he landed a winning double at Canberra last week with Half Moon Magic and Max Destruction he produced the most impressive qualifiers for yesterday’s 440m Mixed Final at Canberra.

Blackmore, based at nearby Murrumbateman, trains in partnership with Matt Mahoney, whose bitch Broughton Beauty qualified as first reserve for the same event yesterday.

Mahoney is the son of respected Boorowa trainer Kevin Mahoney, who passed away last December.

“When Kevin died I was asked to train Half Moon Magic, who is out of his good race greyhound Money Magnet, along with Max Destruction, a son of Rockarena, another of Kevin’s greyhounds," Mahoney said.

Money Magnet won a dozen races, among them wins over both 520m and 720m at Wentworth Park, while Rockarena who 10 races.

Max Destruction’s form was good going into the Canberra heats but it took me a month to get Half Moon Magic to show his true ability.

Max Destruction won his heat in 25.65 but Half Moon Magic clocked 25.37, a very quick run.

“And the beauty of Half Moon Magic is that he will run 520m for sure.

“I’m a roof plumber while Matt Mahoney is a gardening contractor so as we both work full time we help each other out with the greyhounds.’’
