Col Has Dynamite Hopes For Futurity

By Stuart Turner

Col Byers is enjoying one of the best periods of his 40-year training career and is confident of claiming Thursday’s Group 2 Bogie Leigh Queensland Futurity (520m) at Albion Park with Dynamite Speed.

The greyhound jumps from box seven in the $50,000-to-the-winner final looking a strong winning chance after her impressive run in last week’s heats.

Formerly based in North Queensland, Dynamite Speed has only been with Byers for a few weeks but is building a decent record for the Toowoomba-based trainer.

She had an impressive 30.06 debut winning run at Albion Park in her heat last week and Byers believes she can triumph in the decider.

“Bloody oath she can,” he said.

“I only trialled her once before at Albion Park and she improved by four-tenths (last week). I’m hoping she can do that again here.

“She takes a few steps to get going but once she does, but she’s very strong.

“This is a hard race but she can win.”

A daughter of Where’s Pedro x Spring Extreme, Dynamite Speed  has won her last three races in decent company, taking her record to 10 triumphs and two minor placings from 20 starts.

She will have to contend with OVER Here, who ran 29.84 last week, and dangerous Cyndie’s Magic either side of her in boxes six and eight respectively.

“She has pace inside and outside her but I was reasonably happy with the draw,” Byers said.

OVER Here has a couple of lengths on her at the start but Dynamite Speed has got three lengths on her at the finish.

“If she can stay in touch coming home, she’s a big hope.”

Newcomer Magic Maiden (box five) has been running well despite some unfavourable box draws and looks a threat here.

Kingsbrae Lavinia, Pocahontas, Titan Ash and Abby’s Magic complete what looks an even field.

Byers enjoyed the best day of his career last month when he secured five wins at an Ipswich Tuesday meeting.

The 67-year-old almost enjoyed a sixth victory when Giggling Beach finished runner-up in the day’s ninth race.

“I said to someone, ‘that it – the wheels have fallen off,’” Byers said with a grin.

“A day like that makes all the hard work you put in worthwhile.

"I'm fairly confident Dynamite Speed can win here."

This meeting also features five excellent heats of the Queensland Derby.
