Space Star Heads Gold Cup Hopefuls

By Stuart Turner

Australia’s leading stayer Space Star returns to Wentworth Park this Saturday aiming to further improve his already scintillating year.

Space Star (pictured) jumps from box four in the first of two Group 3 Gold Cup (720m) heats looking for a remarkable fifth Group race victory of 2015.

Robbie Britton’s greyhound heads back to Wentworth Park for the $25,000-to-the-winner race three weeks after claiming the Group 1 AAA Radiator Specialists Association Cup.

That thrilling race saw Space Star produce a terrific come-from-behind effort to defeat valiant rival Lady Toy.

Space Star will likely start prohibitive odds for his heat – and his chances have been bolstered by the draw.

Although probably best known for being a formidable wide runner, Britton’s charge has also won four of his previous five starts exiting from box four.

Space Star’s toughest opponent here looks like Sweet It Is, who jumps from box eight.

She finished fourth in the Association Cup after returning for the heats after three months on the sidelines.

If she can regain the form that saw her claim no less than five Group wins in 2014, she will be a huge threat.

Zipping Maggie (box five), who has a best of 41.78 win at Wentworth Park and reached the Association Cup final, heads the contenders in heat two.

Box two’s Mullaway, who recently broke the 600m track record at Albion Park and handy Tasmanian Lillycette (box one) look decent chances here as well.

One eye-catching hopeful in the second heat is veteran sprinter-cum-stayer Bessy Boo (box four), last year’s Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic winner.

Christine Proctor’s greyhound has switched between the distances in recent months, winning on his last start over the 720m at Wentworth Park in mid-February.

He has always been a strong finisher over the 520m and middle distances and looks capable of reaching the final at least.

The night also features some super sprint races, including the ladbrokes.com.au Sprint Series Final  (race seven).

White Label (box five) ran a strong 29.86 to win at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and looks tempting here.
