Owner Sticking With Boom Pup Cleanser

By Stuart Turner

Cleanser is due to race at Dapto this Thursday after connections turned down a $155,000 bid for the star newcomer.

The exciting sprinter, currently the hottest property in NSW greyhound racing, was the subject of huge interest from potential owners after his sensational debut run over 520m at Dapto last week.

Prospective buyers from across Australia and NEW ZEALAND were in the mix, with a domestic syndicate reportedly offering $155,000 – with a $20,000 bonus for any future Group 1 victory also thrown – for Cleanser.

Trainer Garry Williams said he had asked the owner for his final decision last night after receiving that bid.

“He texted me back and said, ‘let’s have some fun with him’,” Williams said with a grin.

“He has invested so much in this greyhound and I think he wants to stick with him.

“The guys in the syndicate were really good about the decision.

“He looks like he has a chance to go right to the top. It will be great to work with him some more.”

Cleanser has been the talk of the NSW greyhound racing world after winning his maiden race last Thursday in a remarkable 29.50.

The victory by almost 16 lengths was just .06 short of the 520m track record, set by former joint NSW Greyhound of the Year Double Twist on Boxing Day 2013.

Cleanser’s sire Magic Sprite won 10 out of 11 races in a short but spectacular career, while dam Scissor Queen triumphed on 20 of her 31 efforts.

Williams said he had mapped out a short-term racing plan for Cleanser, starting with Dapto on Thursday.

All being Well, the sprinter will have a post-to-post trial at Wentworth Park next Tuesday before enjoying a fifth grade run at Goulburn seven days later.

Cleanser, who turned 19 months old last Sunday, will then likely head back to Wentworth Park for competitive races in early May.

He jumps from box four in the Dapto Markets Maiden Series Final (520m, race four) this week and Williams is eager top see his charge in action again.

“Will I be nervous?” the trainer said.  “Well, I believe what happens in life, happens.

“His first section last week was 5.35. He is a good beginner and as long as he doesn’t get knocked in the first two or three strides, I think he should win.

“I’m quietly confident he will go Well.”
