Six-Figure Bids Roll In For Cleanser

By Stuart Turner

Cleanser’s racing future should be decided on Monday afternoon with connections currently weighing up a $155,000 offer for the star newcomer.

The fledgling sprinter has been the talk of the NSW greyhound racing world after running a superb 29.50 – just .06 outside the track record - over the 520m at Dapto last Thursday.

Trainer Garry Williams said his phone had been running hot since the amazing run with six-figure offers for the greyhound, including bidders from Australia, NEW ZEALAND and China.

An offer of $155,000, which also comes with a $20,000 bonus for any future Group 1 victory, is under the strongest consideration.

“It’s in the owner’s hands now,” Williams said. “He knows an offer is on the table (and) I’m expecting a decision from him on Monday afternoon.

“If it was up to me I would take it but you have to weigh everything up.

“I wouldn’t like to say how he compares to the greats but he is a freakish dog.”

Cleanser is a son of Magic Sprite who won 10 of 11 races in a short but stunning career.

Dam Scissor Queen had the imposing record of 20 triumphs from 31 starts in a career mostly spent on northern NSW tracks.

Williams said his charge had been running “phenomenal” times in performance trials before his stunning competitive debut.

“From the early days I was telling my wife, ‘this greyhound is an amazing talent’,” he said.

“He clocked 29.87 in a performance trial at Dapto two weeks before his debut (and) has been outrunning dogs with 10 race wins behind them.

“When I first put him round at 15 months old he was phenomenal and he’s just got better and better.”

Williams said Cleanser was still due to run in this Thursday’s final at Dapto and was looking in good shape.

“Most greyhounds need a couple of days to get over a big run like that, but this bloke looked ready to go again the next day,” the trainer said.

“When I take him to the stir-up he just stands there still and focuses. He just seems to know already what he needs to do.

“He is the perfect dog to handle.”
