My Bro Fabio May Yet Race Again

By Stuart Turner

My Bro Fabio’s racing days may not be over despite injury forcing him out of this Saturday’s Group 3 Ambrosoli Sprint Series Final (520m) at Wentworth Park.

The superstar sprinter (pictured with trainer Brooke Ennis) has been ruled out of the $25,000-to-the-winner race, one of six major titles up for grabs to conclude the Golden Easter Egg series, due to an inflamed ligament close to his stopper bone.

Connections had previously indicated that the four-time Group winner, who has 26 victories from 52 starts and almost $500,000 prizemoney to his name, would be retired after the Golden Easter Egg series.

Brooke's husband and kennel spokesman Jamie Ennis said talks on the greyhound’s future were ongoing and his charge may yet race again.

“The owners and myself are still discussing the future,” he said.

“I’m not saying he will be retired as we have not made the final decision. We will see how quickly the injury heals and whether or not it takes two or three weeks to heal.

“It could be that the dog is fine in two weeks’ time and in that case we may press on (with racing) but if it is a six week (recovery) then we will probably retire him.”

Widely considered Australia's best current sprinter, My Bro Fabio was heavily fancied for the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg but was unable to qualify for this Saturday’s final.

He squeezed into the semi-finals as one of the fastest fourth-place finishers in his heat and finished fourth in the semi-final despite running 29.85.

My Bro Fabio’s scratching from the Ambrosoli means My Boy Snoop gets a run in box seven as first reserve.

Anthony Azzopardi’s sprinter was an impressive heat winner in the Golden Easter Egg before finishing fifth in his semi-final last Saturday night.
